Planet Rugby Team of the YEar 2012

Tough calls: PR's XV

You've had your turn, now it's ours. After hours of debate and dummy-spitting here at Planet Rugby HQ, we've selected our line-up of 2012.

Three players were brought in from the cold by our panel of journalists while the remaining twelve you named receive a further pat on the back.

So without further ado, here comes our offering - be sure to send in your own 15-1 team line-ups.

Planet Rugby's Team of the Year

15 Israel Dagg (Crusaders & New Zealand) - The majority ruled on this one as Israel Dagg gets in ahead of Leigh Halfpenny after another superb year for franchise and country. Dagg keeps on producing at full-back and while Halfpenny was strong throughout, the Kiwi was a touch better.
Bubbling under: Leigh Halfpenny (Cardiff Blues & Wales)

14 Bryan Habana (Stormers & South Africa) - After a moment of deliberation, we went for Bryan Habana over JP Pietersen. In truth it was a simple decision after the veteran's outstanding Rugby Championship campaign when he scored the International Rugby Players' Association's Try of 2012.
Bubbling under: JP Pietersen (Sharks & South Africa)

13 Conrad Smith (Hurricanes & New Zealand) - This was arguably the quickest decision we made in the selection process. Conrad Smith was superb all year, with his leadership of a young Hurricanes team given no hope in pre-season something that has to be hailed.
Bubbling under: Jonathan Davies (Scarlets & Wales)

12 Sonny Bill Williams (Chiefs & New Zealand) - There was a whisper at PR questioning whether the Chiefs would have won the Super Rugby title without SBW? There is no doubt, however, that he was developing into a fine centre, with six months of action enough for us.
Bubbling under: Wesley Fofana (Clermont & France)

11 Julian Savea (Hurricanes & New Zealand) - Nine tries in your debut Super Rugby year, twelve scores in your first nine internationals for your country: 2012 has been quiet a season for Julian Savea. He would be the first to credit others, such as Conrad Smith, but there is no doubting that the 'Canes finisher has the tools to become a frequent scorer for years to come. We feel applause must go to AB coach Steve Hansen too for managing him well.
Bubbling under: Gonzalo Camacho (Exeter & Argentina)

10 Dan Carter (Crusaders & New Zealand) - An average game by his standards is deemed an great day at the office by so many others. While Dan Carter wasn't around all year, when he was rivals struggled to cope as he bounced back from an injury riddled 2011 strongly.
Bubbling under: Fred Michalak (Sharks & France)

9 Ruan Pienaar (Ulster & South Africa) - Maybe seen as a surprise call by some but the performances of Ruan Pienaar for Ulster during both their Heineken Cup and RaboDirect PRO12 campaigns were excellent. He saved his province plenty of times with key goal-kicks but it was the calming presence he provided that sees him get in ahead of Aaron Smith. It is also worth noting the difference he made when taking over at nine from Francois Hougaard.
Bubbling under: Aaron Smith (Highlanders & New Zealand)

8 Kieran Read (Crusaders & New Zealand) - There was a two for two tie at PR HQ before deciding votes came from other contributors that meant Kieran Read got the nod ahead of Louis Picamoles. Picamoles has been a carrying machine all year for Toulouse and France but Read just possesses rugby intelligence in spades to go alongside many man-of-the-match efforts, which means he takes the eight spot. He was a superb leader in Canterbury.
Bubbling under: Louis Picamoles (Toulouse & France)

7 Richie McCaw (Crusaders & New Zealand) - 65% of our readers went with him, 100% of us did the same. Richie McCaw put in yet another impressive campaign for his country, but may be left disappointed at drawing with Australia before losing to England. Over his six months off though he may realise just what he has achieved in the past year or so as World Cup triumph was followed by a 100th Test victory with the All Blacks. Rest up, Richie.
Bubbling under: Francois Louw (Bath & South Africa)

6 Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe (Toulon & Argentina) - While Dan Lydiate enjoyed an exceptional Six Nations, Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe was a joy to watch in the Rugby Championship. The 31-year-old Toulon back-row seamlessly switched between blindside and eight all year and those efforts from August to October were a sight to behold as he combined a high tackle count with line-out takes and general classy play around the field.
Bubbling under: Dan Lydiate (Dragons & Wales)

5 Nathan Sharpe (Western Force & Australia) - An extended international career due to the absence of James Horwill meant that "Sharpey" gave it one final slog in the Gold jersey this year. It paid off for both player and coach as Nathan Sharpe left everything on the field for his country and thus won his second John Eales Medal before calling it day. On a side note, a mention must go to Ireland's Donnacha Ryan who continues to grow into a solid lock.
Bubbling under: Donnacha Ryan (Munster & Ireland)

4 Eben Etzebeth (Stormers & South Africa) - Debut seasons like this usually do not come from players in the engine room. Eben Etzebeth bucked that trend this year as the Western Province native's physicality was a feature in both Super Rugby and Springbok rugby. One concern is that he may take the Bakkies Botha hard man similarities too seriously and thus pick himself up a reputation, which we hope is not the case. A real talent has emerged.
Bubbling under: Sam Whitelock (Crusaders & New Zealand)

3 Census Johnston (Toulouse & Samoa) - We went for two islanders as our props this year but it wasn't a unanimous decision at tighthead. Dan Cole continues to mature into an outstanding front-rower but we can't remember Toulouse's pack ever being in big trouble in 2012 and Census Johnston was one reason why. His efforts for an in-form Samoan side were also admirable so the votes went the way of the 31-year-old, who's pushing 140 kgs.
Bubbling under: Dan Cole (Leicester & England)

2 Rory Best (Ulster and Ireland) - His form seldom dipped when wearing either white or green as Rory Best shone for Ireland and Ulster during the Heineken Cup, PRO12, Six Nations and June series. Even in a losing squad in New Zealand, Kiwi pundits noted his performances for his country so we felt he pips Adriaan Strauss. Massive credit to the Bok though as his all-action style meant Bismarck du Plessis' absence wasn't noticeable.
Bubbling under: Adriaan Strauss (Cheetahs & South Africa)

1 Sona Taumalolo (Chiefs & Tonga) - Again a tough selection decision as Cian Healy made the British & Irish Lions loosehead jersey his own this past year after great shifts for Leinster and Ireland. However, there was a Tongan making serious noise in the southern hemisphere in 2012 as Sona Taumalolo rivalled wingers in the Super Rugby try charts and also was strong in the dark arts. Tonga truly is blessed in the loosehead prop department.
Bubbling under: Cian Healy (Leinster & Ireland)

bloemboy, you are funny! i had heard the hcup vs s15 thing a few times, but 6n vs s15, now you are smoking dope mon ami..... i can't speak for the other 6N teams, but maybe you forgot france is in that tournament too? rwc runner-up last year, best record overall at rwcs at making it to semis (tied with nz), currently ranked 4th in the world, ring any bells? hmmm, hardly a match for rebels or lions or cheetahs or ANOther s15 team, eh...?

by the way, your list of french players is interesting (if a little short). you might add servat, dusautoir, bonnaire and harionordoquy, and that's just in the pack.....

merry xmas and happy smoking :-)

@ hellovanite - for a usually sensible chap, your head must have just imploded. You may not realise it, but this is what you wrote:

"No I've never seen a better scrummager than Taumalolo". Now unless I've misunderstood your post - it's a distinct possibility - you're suggesting that Taumalolo is the best scrummager you've ever seen. Not the best prop, but the best *scrummager*.

So unless you've only ever watched him scrummage and have ignored all other props in the world, you've got it plain wrong. There are many, MANY better scrummaging props in the world, past and present.

A quick list off the top of my head (LH & TH)

Cole

Sheridan

Hayman

Beast

Tongahuia

Mujarti

Barnes

Healy

Johnston

Budgen

Jones

Wilson

Roncero

Castrogiovanni

Mas

Os du Randt

Vickery

Leonard

And that's a small sample from the top of my head. My English bias naturally made me lean in that direction, but ask anyone for their list of "better scrummaging props than Taumalolo" and they'll add plenty more.

I think you need a break, my freind, the pressure's starting to show.

@hellovanite. Here's an early xmas present for you...

http://www.vipbox.tv/

Free rugby on your laptop. How great is that! All the Top 14 games are on it. Feel free to watch any of Perpignan's forthcoming games (Montpellier at home Dec 22nd, Toulon away dec 30th) while there's not much SH rugby going on.... Then we can have a proper talk about Taumalolo in the New Year perhaps?

@new_j4a. hehehe yes, I've been working on my trolling skills, but I'm afraid my heart isn't really in it! 25 degrees and sunny here in Rondebosch. Kids in the pool. Beer in the fridge. Cricket on the radio. Must remember to do my daily run around the RBHS playing fields a little earlier tomorrow before the sun gets too high! Happy Xmas to you and yours too :-)

Taumalolo schooled Owen Franks in the Crusaders-Chiefs mid season game. Then he schooled the French prop in RWC when Tonga won. Then he became top tryscoring forward in Super Rugby. He was also top metre gainer forward in the Super Rugby. Against Wallaby, Springbok and All Black forwards. Taumalolo is the best prop of the year. Case closed. You don't have to play for a major rugby nation to be considered a major player.

If you had to put any of the 6N teams into the S15, they would have to compete with the Lions and all the Aussie teams for Wooden Spoon honours. For team of the year, 5 teams could be selected (40% Kiwi, 35% SA, 10% Puma and 10% the rest from SH and 5% NH) and still not comprise a full NH side.

Aside from the French who have Picamoles, Clerq, Michelak and Mas, not too many contributers from the other sides.

Would you seriously pick Halfpenny ahead of Andre Taylor, Lydiate ahead of Alberts, Cole ahead of Franks or Best ahead of Strauss, du Plessis, my Gran?

hellovanite says...

Rosbif... Are you trying to say that the scrums in the NH are better than the SH. Don't make me laugh! No I've never seen a better scrummager than Taumalolo, it is surprising how the NH props (half of them are from the SH) have schooled one of our best. He has never been a renowned scrummager, usually just lethal near a try line, so Jog on mate!

@ Isograford. Stick to your knitting. What you know about rugby you can write on the back of a postage stamp. Kerr-Barlow is just another J Marshall. Slow to the ruck, crap pass, poor decision maker. Had an absolute crap ITM Cup. Was solid in the S15, but was outplayed when the Highlanders played the Chiefies in the Tron IIRC. Was luckly to make the tour ahead of pretty boy Ellis.

Aaron Smith has had a huge year for a young guy. Stepped up in some really big tests. Don't put the blame entirely on Smith when he was under pressure. His forwards weren't giving him that much protection. Not that some of the blame can't go his way. Kerr-Barlow is good, but a clear 3rd or 4th if we include Perenara - who is as you say, immensely talented. OK - you got one thing right.

@Ben7

If Leinster played a bottom ranked super 15 team you'd put money on the super 15 team? If this happens I'll take that bet for any price you want.

Proud as punch 3 Irish lads even considered to be able to mix it in such company. Healy will start as 1 for lions, End of.

From another angle, Ruan Pienaar has been massive for Ulster and got them to the HC final, won the game against Ireland and been massive all round. The saffers have so much talent, and when he left SA for Ulster, I was overjoyed at our luck. Should of been considered for player of the year.

What the hell is davies doing ahead of tuilagi for the 'bubbling under' section?! Did PR not watch any England test matches this year? Fofana was better than SBW and as much as I hate to say it...Tomalaulo is playing whipping boy in the top 14 when he comes up against decent scrummagers...Healy should have that spot.

To my fellow countryman Isograford, TKB was awful on the end of year tour, so I wouldn't start writing off A Smith just yet...

@Rosbif....LOL....who says "In all seriousness, how can you pick a prop who shines in S15? Talk about oxymoron!"...you trying a little amateur trolling? Happy Christmas to you and yours anyway

Isograford says...

I think here in New Zealand there's a bubbling undercurrent of those starting to question Aaron Smith (beyond the bullet pass).

Tawera-Kerr Barlow put him under immense pressure when the Chiefs played the Highlanders, and whenever his team is going backwards Smith cracks like a cheap Egg.

Either Kerr-Barlow or the Hurricanes immensely talented TJ Perenara will probably take over the 9 jersey once the All Blacks selectors get over the love affair with Smiths pass.

Can someone tell me why that isn't happening? Surely a NH vs SH club championship game would be HUGE.

Bloemboy, cant fault your logic but the most glaring omission was at 10 where Morne Steyn was cruelly ignored.

Rosbif says...

@Ben7. S15 vs HCup is a whole different debate which I'm sure has been done to death already.... I did not realise a player could make it into "Team of the Year" simply by being part of the winning S15 franchise....maybe I'm wrong.....

If we look at individuals, not teams, which I assumed was the point, there is a (fairly long) list of better loose-heads this year at test and club/franchise level eg Roncero, Forestier, Corbisiero, Ayerza, Jenkins, Healy etc. Woodcock suffered from the poor early season form of the Blues, but I'd still pick him in my team if I could! Or even Wyatt Crockett.

My point is that Taumalolo has been "schooled" here in France (which I guess a lot of S15 TV viewers won't have seen?). In Top 14 he has come up against tightheads like Kubriashvili, Zirakashvili, Census J, Hayman, Ducalcon etc and has been made to look very average. Meanwhile, other looseheads in Top14 like Sheridan, Steenkamp and Ben Arrous have all coped much better at scrum time against the same opponents. And they have been much better around the park too (which is meant to be T's strength).

So my question is, if Taumalolo is so good, why is he so average when playing week in week out in a tough scrummaging league like Top 14? Could it be that S15 looseheads are not expected to scrummage? Or is it simply that he is a "popular" figure in S15, lots of cousins and relatives in various teams, ruffled McCaw's hair a few times, does the crazy eyes thing when he scores, etc etc.

Don't get me wrong. He's fun to watch. Puts bums on seats. And seems a great character. Just not the best loose-head prop in the world based on the last 12 months imo.

:-)

@gingergenius: probably because of things like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yExkpdBLoQU

The Ireland scrum was an abberation that day in Twickenham and mostly an issue on the tight head side. Healy will start for the lions.

Surely Zane Kirchner ahead of Dagg, and who on earth would pick Dan Cole or Census Johnston ahead of Dean Greyling. Foul play I say. We need more Bulls players like Vermaak, Olivier and Englebrecht to at least be bubbling under
