Kurt Baker: Scored two tries
Taranaki successfully defended the Ranfurly Shield with a 49-40 victory over Tasman in New Plymouth on Saturday.
The win moves Colin Cooper's side to joint top spot of the ITM Cup standings with Canterbury although Taranaki have played one matche less than the Christchurch outfit.
New All Blacks fly-half Beauden Barrett was Taranaki's hero contributing 29 points via a try, three conversions and six penalties in this win.
Both sides played expansively and the home side were rewarded with their first try as early as the first minute when Blade Thomson rounded off a free flowing which saw fine inter-play between forwards and backs.
The first half saw plenty of end-to-end action with Taranaki notching up their bonus point, for scoring four tries, by the 25th minute.
Two of those were scored by Kurt Baker, who made a successful switch from centre to full-back, and Waisake Naholo added the fourth.
Baker's first try was the best of the match. The New Zealand Sevens star received a pass from Barrett on his own 10 metre line and beat three defenders before dotting down.
Earlier, Tasman's left wing James Lowe also rounded off an impressive effort after running on to a pass from Tevita Cavubati close to the halfway line.
Tasman who upset Canterbury in their opener last week showed that that result was not a fluke and at half-time Taranaki held a slender 32-30 lead.
Although the second half produced less points there was no let-up in the action with both sides going all out for a win.
In the end Tasman conceded too many penalties and Barrett punished them if it was within goal-kicking range.
The pivot sealed Taranaki's win when he burrowed his way over the try-line from close quarters in the 78th minute.
The scorers:
For Taranaki:

This was an awesome match watch!!! Too much quality (if that's possible) I mean, both sides just kept attacking, like some of the lighter weight boxing fights, just attack with all you got, take a punch give a punch stuff! Very entertaining!!!
Hard luck to Tasman, dam you guys fought well!!!

Carpelone - Glen Jackson is on the way to the top IMO. He has the fitness, understands how players work and communicates with humour and common sense. Still the powers that be overlooked Mark Lawrence and Vinny Munro for the W Cup in preference for some lesser lights.

passtheball - i hope you are right, and one challenge at a time; i only saw the last 10min then highlights of canterbuy game, imagine they would be fairly confident of taking the rs home (i saw one news article that said 're-claiming it' as if they own it, cheeky b's) look at their team they too have plenty of stars. taranaki can be so frustrating - but this team has to be the best in recent years, balance of a strong pack and surely the best backline since . . .i can't remember. even without andre taylor having baker as backup, think all the subs were very good yesterday
had to laugh at eaton after the game bagging his mate hore for 'not doing anything on the field' they have a great team spirit i think. and a crowd of 10,000, life in the provinces!

How was Jackson? I think to bring ex players into the ref ranking is a commendable idea

Melkdave - I would also recommend you keep away from Canterbury games as they are so robotic - very successful yes but... yawn. The other teams make more mistakes but their players have not had individuality / adventure drummed out of them. I'm sure Canty fans would disagree!

HB will need to lift their game to lift the shield Ferdie. The Naki are a well rounded team that can play a lot of styles.
Melkdave - keep watching there are many games as good or nearly as good - leaves S15 etc for dead for entertainment.
Ref Glen Jackson contributed to the fun too.

Incredible game!! Watched it live on Foxtel in Aussie. Great to hear the results of the Heartland Comp in NZ as well. Could Planet Rugby include the Heartland Comp from NZ as well in results??

one small record for tasman, as far as I can find, they are now the highest scoring losing side in rs history, overtaking auckland who lost 39-42 (to taranaki) in 1996. but there's no bonus point for that stat.

crazy game to watch, first try to taranaki after 26 seconds, 10 scored in all; 32-20 at halftime ten min later 35-all was getting rtehr worried at that satge every time taranaki scored tasman would do the same, took till 77th min to get more than 5pts in front. and the man waiting behind carter and cruden - barrett - 29 points today (all of their 2nd half points) following on from 22pts last weekend
one more week with the shiled, leaky defence like that will see it going home with hawke's bay next friday
