Lions: Two big defeats on the trot

Hawke's Bay inflicted back-to-back ITM Cup defeats on Wellington, as the home side ran out 40-20 winners in Napier on Friday.

The Magpies outscored the Lions by six tries to two in a dominant display that heaped further misery on Wellington following their 32-0 thumping at the hands of Bay of Plenty last time out.

Hawke's Bay scored four tries in the first half and added two more long-range tries in the second to secure a comprehensive win in this crossover clash.

The Lions were initially undone by a rash of tries to Hawke's Bay in the first half, the last three of which that were scored in quick succession were created from turnovers or the result of Wellington handling errors and ultimately proved fatal to Wellington's chances of securing a positive result.

With their tails up, Hawke's Bay capitalised on a 65 per cent territorial advantage and opened up a 23-10 advantage at the interval.

The Lions rebounded from the onslaught early in the second half and appeared to have scored a comeback try to lock Mark Reddish, who crashed over after a period of concerted pressure.

This try would have closed the score to the margin of a converted try with 20 minutes remaining, but referee Matt Muir ruled that he knocked it on over the line without consulting the TMO.

The Lions kept the heat on but couldn't complete further opportunities in the face of desperate defence.

Instead the Magpies won a key turnover and replacement centre Tua Sasave scored a length-of-the field runaway try. Andrew Horrell added the extras and the Magpies led by 20 points.

The Lions hit back with a converted try to full-back Jason Woodward, closing the gap to 33-20 and needing to score at least two tries to win heading into the final 10 minutes.

Once more the Lions probed hard, but another Hawke's Bay turnover from deep within their own territory resulted in another try at the end to full-back Mark Jackman. Horrell's 80th minute conversion from wide out hammered the final nail in Wellington's coffin.
