Fitting tribute: Chris Henry
Ulster openside flanker Chris Henry said that the spirit of Nevin Spence played a major role in their 48-19 win over Cardiff Blues at the Arms Park.
The tragic death of Spence, his father and brother had left a massive void at the Ravenhill outfit, who had last week's game against Zebre postponed.
But on their return to RaboDirect PRO12 action, they put in a superb showing that saw a sense of unity and togetherness en route to seven tries.
"The only thing that mattered out there tonight was the rugby. That was the way Nevin would have wanted it," Henry told reporters afterwards.
"We have his name on our shirt now, the initials 'NS', and that will stay right with us through the season. If you ask any player Nev was with us out there tonight."
The victory was Ulster's fourth of the season as they moved top of the table, with one round remaining before the Heineken Cup begins.
Scores on the day came from Michael Allen, Tommy Bowe (2), Nick Williams (2), Jared Payne and Andrew Trimble as they paid tribute to the strength shown by the Spence family.
"Seeing how the Spence family had dealt with the tragedy, we could not have responded any other way than the way we have (here)," added Henry.
"Everyone involved in Ulster Rugby has to take credit for the professional way we have gone about our business. Yes, the situation is still raw with us and it was emotional tonight and it will be again.
"It is not something that is ever going to go away from us easily and we have to use it in the best way and hopefully we did Nev proud tonight."
