Weir's boot guides Glasgow to victory

Duncan Weir: Matchwinner

Duncan Weir kicked all Glasgow's points in their 18-6 win over Aironi in their RaboDirect PRO12 clash on Saturday.

Glasgow took the lead almost immediately when Weir obliged with his first penalty after Aironi had been penalised for an infringement at the ruck.

But the Scots' lead lasted a matter of moments as South African Naas Olivier took the opportunity in front of goal offered to him after a Glasgow player had strayed offside.

Aironi then went close to adding to their lead and it was only the composure of Warriors full-back Johnnie Beattie that kept the scores level.

But the hosts did take the lead from the resultant scrum when Olivier added his second penalty of the afternoon after Glasgow had again strayed offside.

There was little in the way of flowing rugby being produced by either side and the remaining points of the half predictably came via the boot.

Happily for the visitors, it was nine points from Weir that would follow before the interval.

Penalties on 15 and 22 minutes made it 9-6 to Glasgow and a drop-goal from the Warriors fly-half seconds before half-time stretched the lead further.

The second half began much the way the first ended. The war of attrition resumed and defences held firm.

Aironi needed points but the Warriors were not in a giving mood and when Olivier scuppered the opportunity to narrow the gap for the hosts you sensed it wasn't going to be Aironi's day.

And so it proved, with two more penalties from Weir cementing the victory for Glasgow.
