Ulster try-scorer: Paul Marshall

Ulster opened their RaboDirect PRO12 League campaign with a hard-fought 28-14 win over Glasgow at Ravenhill.

In a match which just couldn't quite maintain a constant level of fluency, the home side looked the brighter of the two sides, particularly in the opening half.

It was Sean Lineen's side, however, that began the game the brightest and it was the Scots that scored the first points.

After an opening 10 minutes of good physical play at the break down, centre Troy Nathan crashed over from close range to give the Warriors an early lead.

Conversion missed. But Ulster responded well to the early set-back.

Fly-half Ian Humphreys kicked three points after Glasgow conceded a penalty on 15 minutes. And moments later they scored their first try.

Warriors' scrum half Colin Gregor dived on a loose ball and gave a pass meant for a team mate, but Darren Cave intercepted the ball and ran under the posts to touch down. The conversion scored by Humphreys.

Duncan Weir booted a penalty on 36 minutes for Glasgow, but a minute later Ulster scrum-half Paul Marshall intelligently slipped down the blindside off the back of a ruck to go over in the corner.

Weir managed to secure another three points on the stroke of half time to leave the score at the break at 15-11.

The second half was a scrappy affair with the wet weather preventing both sides from playing the free flowing rugby that they craved.

Weir stuck his third penalty on 48 minutes, but two Ulster three-pointers gave them the upper hand, before skipper Chris Henry finished off a driving maul off the back of a scrum five minutes from time to seal the win for Brian McLaughlin's men.
