Scott Higginbotham Rebels win v Stormers 2013

Plenty to celebrate: Scott Higginbotham

Rebels loose forward Scott Higginbotham has been named the Rebels' player of the season as they bid farewell to a number of players.

The Melbourne franchise's awards night had an extra layer of emotion to it, with ten players and the coaching staff heading on their way, including a number of players who have been with the team since its inception. Gareth Delve, Ged Robinson, Kurtley Beale, Nick Phipps, Richard Kingi, Cooper Vuna, James King and James O'Connor are those heading for pastures new while Nic Henderson and Tim Davidson are retiring.

Fly-half Bryce Hegarty would have been expecting limited game time heading into the season due to the presence of O'Connor and Beale, but the youngster ended the season as one of the Rebels' strongest players, a point that was recognised when he was named Rebel Rising Player of the Year.

Back Tom English was named the club's Rookie of the Year after an impressive first stint. He was joined on the roll of honour by flanker Scott Fuglistaller who received the Spirit of Weary Dunlop Award, which is handed out to the player who shows the most passion on the field.

The Rod Macqueen Pursuit of Excellence Award went to Phipps, but it was Higginbotham that unsurprisingly went home with the top prize, the Players' Player of the Year.

The Wallaby headed the voting by some measure, with Fuglistaller and Robinson the next best.
