Gibson quits Crusaders post

Daryl Gibson

Moving on: Daryl Gibson

Daryl Gibson is standing down from his position as assistant coach for the Crusaders, as he doesn't want to focus solely on defence next year.

The former All Blacks and Crusaders centre was part of the Super Rugby franchise's coaching set-up for the last four years, but has tendered his resignation - effective immediately.

Gibson's coaching responsibilities changed after the completition of the 2012 Super Rugby season, and his new role in 2013 was going to focus specifically on defence while another coach would look after attack.

Head coach Todd Blackadder says the restructure changed Gibson's thinking.

"Obviously he's had some time to reflect and come to the conclusion that it really wasn't quite for him and I really respect that," he said.

Gibson said he had a fantastic four years with the Crusaders, but decided it was not where his immediate future lay.

"It is time for me to forge my own path now - as shown by many Crusaders' assistant coaches, such as Colin Cooper and Vern Cotter - who have gone on to other exciting things," said Gibson, who's next role will be assistant coach to Jamie Joseph for the Maori All Blacks' three-match tour of the United Kingdom in November.

Gibson's resignation means the Crusaders will review their coaching set-up and appoint a new assistant with backs experience before assessing other options.

I think that means a promotion for either Aaron Mauger or Leon McDonald. Or both.
