Young talent: Pablo Matera

Leicester Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill hopes to work out an agreement to keep Pablo Matera at the club.

The 20-year-old is out of contract but has impressed in his brief number of appearances for the side this season.

Now a fully-fledged Argentina international, Matera's commitments to the national side in The Rugby Championship mean the situation is complicated.

Cockerill revealed though that talks were ongoing to resolve the situation.

For Matera there is also the lure of returning to Argentina to play in Super Rugby, for the new franchise that will be added in 2016.

"We're in the middle of negotiations to try to make that work," Cockerill told the BBC.

"It's a complicated situation. We're doing our damndest to keep him here.

"How that works with Argentina and the southern hemisphere Super Rugby competition we'll have to see.

"Our contracts start 1 July, so you're talking four or five months of full salary before we get to see the player.

"That's not the players fault, that's just the circumstances we're in. We have to be delicate around that and make sure you have enough coverage.

"When they come back from Argentina they are in different fitness scales - they've played some tough rugby."

Leicester confirmed on Thursday the signings of Italian back-row Robert Barbieri and number eight Laurence Pearce from Rotherham.
