Doubt: Stuart Hooper

Bath director of rugby Gary Gold has revealed that second row captain Stuart Hooper is touch-and-go to face Bordeaux-Begles.

Gold's squad are currently undergoing a serious run of injuries at lock, with England's Dave Attwood currently sidelined along with Dominic Day.

Bath were forced to use academy lock Will Spencer against Sale in their loss last Friday, whilst other options include moving Matt Garvey from flanker.

One smaller boost for Gold and his coaching staff is the return to fitness of Ryan Caldwell, who could be involved after a long layoff in the opening Challenge Cup fixture away in France.

"Stuart is battered. He is OK but he is sore," Gold told the Bath Chronicle.

"We will have to wait until the end of the week to see how Stuart gets on. It is touch-and-go whether he is going to be available or not.

"When it rains it pours. Dom Day is still out, Dave Attwood is still out, Stuart has hurt himself and took quite a bad knock on Friday night. It will be important for us to try and have him around.

"The injuries are difficult but we never really want to use that as an excuse.

"One man's injury is opportunity for a guy like Will Spencer to step up to the stage and I think he did a good job on Friday night.

"Ryan [Caldwell] has trained really well the last couple of weeks, so he will be a consideration. It's really good to have him back and we're a bit fortuitous to have him available.

"We've really been excited about his training and the guy is chomping at the bit, he hasn't played rugby in a long time.

"He feels absolutely fantastic from both his hip operations. It's just exciting to see him back again, and for his own personal sake I really hope he hits his straps now and plays because he's had a tough couple of years.

"Switching Matt Garvey is a consideration and obviously we've got that luxury but that's not an accident. That was why someone like Matt Garvey we were particularly keen to try to get.

"If Stuart Hooper can't make it this weekend it makes sense that it is a consideration."
