Steve Borthwick Saracens 2014

Fitness race: Steve Borthwick

Veteran Saracens skipper Steve Borthwick is on course to play in Saturday's Heineken Cup final, the club have confirmed.

The runaway Premiership leaders, who stormed into this weekend's Cardiff showpiece courtesy of a remarkable drubbing of Clermont, are hopeful their captain will be fit to line up in the engine room having suffered a chest knock in Saturday's domestic semi-final win over Harlequins.

The former England second-row, having made a record 264 Premiership appearances, was substituted during the match, but has trained lightly this week and is expected to be fit for Saturday's showdown with Toulon.

"Steve has had a bit of a shock to his system but is progressing pretty well," Saracens coach Paul Gustard told the BBC.

"He is our club captain and it is known that Steve is retiring in two weeks' time.

"It will be a fitting end to a fantastic career, for a guy who has played 57 times for his county and is the most-capped Premiership player, to finish with the Heineken Cup final and the Premiership final. Fingers crossed he will hopefully be fit for the weekend."
