Wandile Mjekevu diving over for Perpignan

Two tries: Wandile Mjekevu

Perpignan brought Edinburgh back down to earth with a hefty Heineken Cup bump on Sunday as they beat the PRO12 side 31-14 at Stade Aimé Giral.

The Scottish side had taken a 7-3 lead at the interval through Tim Visser's try, but it was the French team that dominated after the break.

Wandile Mjekevu touched down twice, while Joffrey Michel and Justin Puril also went over as they sealed the five-point win on home soil

Cornell du Preez crossed the whitewash late on for Edinburgh, but all their good work in the first half was undone by a disappointing second 40.

Despite a difficult start in the RaboDirect Pro12, the Murrayfield-based outfit managed to overcome two-time European champions Munster last week. Meanwhile, Perpignan needed a win after going down to Gloucester, and it was the side boosted by just their second victory of the season that started brightly.

Greig Laidlaw had a chance to open the scoring with a penalty but his effort drifted wide of the target. However, the Top 14 side team then went onto the front foot and James Hook's penalty was their reward for that period of pressure.

Perpignan continued to control proceedings but, despite making a number of indents in the opposition rearguard, Edinburgh held firm. That impressive defence eventually paid off when a fine move ended in Visser going over for yet another try as Alan Solomons' men took a 7-3 lead at the interval.

But the hosts came out rejuvenated in the second half and soon crossed the whitewash through Michel.

The Scottish outfit were now struggling to deal with the pace and power of the home team and Mjekevu touched down for their second try. Puril and Mjekevu then went over to confirm the bonus-point and, although Du Preez scored late on, it proved to be mere consolation.
