@lostprofit - you said:

"What is NOT fair is the amount of childish crying from the Frence and English unions. Be under no illusion: they are angry because they are not winning."

And:

"Change the rules if you want. Hell, I agree with you and Ill help you.

"But dont you dare claim in the future to be for the good of the game. Its for the good of your own pride."

If the English and French unions were merely 'crying' because they 'are not winning', would they not want to change the format to what ERC is suggesting, where Pro12 teams have to finish in the top 6 of their league or win either the Heineken or Amlin? As it is, they're arguing against this (NB - I actually agree with the suggestions that ERC are making), so your point, if indeed you even have one, is moot. You and the rest of the idiots on here are just frothing at the mouth because the word 'English' has appeared on the screen and it sounds like there might be something you can have a jab about.

Until the leagues that the teams play in have the same consequences of defeat then there will always be unfairness.

@GoWalesG

Ay he did, and its pretty much the only thing he was right about.

@lawynd

It wont. And I never said it would. The current format should be kept because it is entertaining with excellent draws been made every year. WITHOUT benefiting any one nation.

Change the Celtic qualification but dont want to change the format of the competition itself.

Read posts properly.

NHsaints says...

It could all be made fair with some simple alterations...the top 25 teams from domestic leagues in Europe are represented in the competition on a points system of- wins:losses ratio, then Points scored:points conceded ratio, then number of tries scored. that way we get the most entertaining teams but also the best so for example a team like Gloucester who score lots of tries and are entertaining but don't win too many games will get a chance to play HC rugby and teams will also be encouraged to play running rugby with lots of tries in their home league for better chances of qualification which will make it more entertaining and also the top 20 teams will mean it is more competetive and there will be no easy pools then either. Both these facts will promote better, running rugby which is what NH sides lack when coming up against SH sides...the ability to win from scoring tries. Also do HC seedings off of last season's results in the ERC but in the same manner as previously mentioned so if the last game of the season is between two teams with no chance of qualification then there will still be room for a competetive game as they are competing directly for the next season's seeding and the game will be all about scoring alot as more tries=better points on the seeding system.

Totally agree with what the ERC wishes to do. It makes more sense than the actual configuration of the 2 competitions. Why do the french - whose style of playing degraded miserably to boring kicking contest, by the way - or the english, oppose this is a bit of a mistery. They`ll loose 1 team each, while the italians or the scots could miss everything. Not bad though because it will raise the level of the amlin.

@porridge_time - the English and French clubs want to keep the numbers the same as they are now, not reduce them as is being mooted by ERC. Learn to read.

@lostprofit - how exactly will KEEPING THE TOURNAMENT THE SAME benefit English and French teams? Moron.

Dallaglio also said that he thought the Pro 12/Celtic league qualification system was unfair

Posted 10:18 13th June 2012

lostprofit says...

Hilarious.

Lets start with the basics, shall we?

Is the current format fair? No. Im a Leinster man and would totally support this idea. Top 8 from magners qualify fof the Hcup. If youre 9th, tough. If that means no Italian, Scottish or (shock horror!) my team failed to qualify one year I wouldnt mind. Fair is fair.

What is NOT fair is the amount of childish crying from the Frence and English unions. Be under no illusion: they are angry because they are not winning. During the early 2000's when wasps and tigers were winning everything someone asked Lawrence Dallaglio why English teams were winning everything.

'because we have a harder and longer league and the threat of relegation over our heads' he replied.

Asked now why many English teams are terrible, many will reply:

'because we have a harder and longer league and the threat of relegation over our heads'

Which, of course, is utter crap. English league rugby is going through a down period , 10 man puke rugby indeed, and needs a shake up (haha london welsh, fix your own problems first stupit) and THEN maybe they will win something.

Same with France, they are going through a rough patch as well (2 semis 1 final, no tries?? Not even one? Whatever happeend to french running rugby??)

Change the rules if you want. Hell, I agree with you and Ill help you.

But dont you dare claim in the future to be for the good of the game. Its for the good of your own pride.

And many of you want to change the format? Shame on you the current format is amazingly entertaining and challenging and you would change it?

@pierredelot1

Idiot. National sucess does not equal provincial success, and even then we are only held back by the moronic Kidney.

golden era for Ireland is coming to an end??

Fool, BOD and POC are the start of the golden age.

Cant win at club level so you talk about national meet ups? Youre pathetic.

leinster_goy mentioned the London Welsh debacle. I'm very interested to see how that plays out. Does the Premiership let a former top dog franchise that's experiencing major financial struggles go down for a year especially when they've brought back some of England's big names just for the sake of fairness? As for restructuring the ERC I think it should start with a restructuring of the lengthy Top 14 season and agree that for the now Italian sides would be best served in the Amlin Cup. I'd like to eventually see the ERC expanded so that an NH winner plays a SH winner.

porridge_time says...

So the biggest Union wants more teams to increase their chances of winning the tournament?

English rugby is well represented in the European competitions, the fact that they now struggle to win the big banana is their short comings and not the fault of the current system.

make a euro league of 32 teams. 4 divs, 2 conferences. 16-20 games. breaks for internationals. free agency, none of this signing contracts for another team while still playing for one. there's a reason the NFL is so successful. Salary cap, profit sharing. The way the system is now is ridiculous. I know all you rugby purists will balk at this, but you're balking at it now. ERC could run it. Players would make more, better product.

I thought the NH v SH debate was a bit of a monster.

Now the Rabo v Aviva Prem debate is a venomous beast.

I guess some people just love to argue, love to stick the knife into the opposition, whoever it is.

Irish fans - some of you are making yourselves look at little silly.

Highly intelligent post that Leinster goy, maybe two too many aaas in the final waaaaa. Give us a break, the Premiership and the Top 14 are harder graft than the other league and take more toll, so you should be grateful that they don't want the numbers reduced, makes it easier for your guys anyway. Writing on the wall with the Irish performance in the 6 nations followed by the crushing defeat in NZ. The golden era for Ireland is coming to an end, BOD can't go on for ever O'Connell neither and there are no World Class players on the horizon. If you make it to the semis I'll buy you a pint down at Toulouse, safest offer I've made all week.

It is a bit of whinging but a good suggestion to change the amount of participants, who all should have to qualify. I think there should be a level playing field first, where all the 3 leagues should have the same amont of teams, then there should only be 12 teams in the Heineken Cup based on the top 3 in France, England and the Pro12 all automatically qualifying, with the remaining 3 teams being decided from all these leagues on an end of season best points basis from all the leagues, and if equal on wins, then away wins etc etc. Which could mean in "exceptional" circumstances that one league could have 6 Heineken Cup challengers. This would make for being able to have home and away quarter and semi finals which is more fair and puts the money into the coffers of those teams that have earned the right to take some "home" gate money having got that far.

Funny when people don't READ THE ARTICLE. Both French and English clubs are threatening to leave. Let us not forget that English and Welsh clubs also play for the LV cup and the French have 14 teams in their top flight...not 12. So the French, English clubs would be having to play more games. The Welsh can't though because they don't have a whole league to themselves which can walk out...in my opinion though we should go for it then come back once new terms are agreed because last time that happened Saints won the HC ;D

craigsman says...

It's the French as well!!!

Personally I think it makes sense to make qualification consistent across the leagues. If you are not getting anywhere by talking sometimes a little arm twisting is the way to go. I don't think that suddenly the English teams will be winning again but it will make the playing field more level (and then we come to the salary cap argument).

The English are like their Aussie cousins....they cry when they lose and blame the system. Like when we were kids we'd want to change the rules of the game when we were losing..we all did that!
