Australia v Lions James Horwill

Call for support: James Horwill

Australia captain James Horwill has urged the Wallabies' supporters to stick by their team after losing to South Africa in Cape Town.

A disastrous first-half performance at Newlands had Australia well adrift by half-time, trailing 23-3, with only a consolation try from Chris Feauai-Sautia raising a faint smile for the Wallabies.

Ewen McKenzie's side now head to Rosario to do battle with an impressive Argentina side, who remain without a win in The Rugby Championship but pushed the Wallabies close in Perth when they were defeated 14-13.

Reflecting on his team's performance, Horwill insisted that Australia would improve and praised his side's level of effort in a physical battle with the Springboks.

The latest loss leaves the Wallabies with only two wins from eight matches in 2013 so far.

"We expect to win every time we pull on that green and gold jersey and understand that the public expect that as well," said Horwill.

"We urge them to stick with us and we're sure that the wheel will turn. We're hurting as much as they are.

"I don't think there's any mental fragility creeping in. We need to have a better understanding when it comes to our option taking.

"We're letting teams off the hook and we need to be more clinical about things. You need to pressure teams to get points and we didn't do that tonight.

"The boys fronted up at times, but in patches. You can't fault the effort physically though, our boys got stuck in.

"We knew their lineout maul would be strong and we did a fairly decent job on that and the scrum was quite close. The effort was there."
