All Blacks not unbeatable - Sharpe

Nathan Sharpe: Fancies an upset

Despite overwhelming odds, Wallabies captain Nathan Sharpe remains optimistic that his side can beat the All Blacks in Saturday's third Bledisloe Cup Test in Brisbane.

New Zealand have strung together 16 straight victories against all-comers and are one Test win away from joining the 1969 All Blacks and 1998 Springboks on 17 successive victories.

Few pundits give Australia a chance of upsetting the World Cup winners this weekend but Sharpe, the injury-hit Wallabies' fourth captain this year, said his side were up for the challenge.

"Every team is beatable," the 111-Test lock told reporters.

"We have to play the best game we have played this year - and by a way as well.

"It's close to the best preparation for a long time that I can remember. If we can translate that into a performance on the field tomorrow night, we'll give ourselves a shot.

"We like a challenge and it fits the Australian psyche a little bit. When the backs are to the wall the guys like to show their character."

New Zealand have already retained the Bledisloe Cup - a symbol of trans-Tasman rugby supremacy which they have held since 2003 - following 27-19 and 22-0 victories in August.

The world number two ranked Wallabies were the last side to beat the rampaging All Blacks (25-20) at this weekend's Brisbane venue 14 months ago.

But the Australians have been forced to field far below their best side and are without injured leading stars Will Genia, David Pocock, Quade Cooper, James O'Connor, Stephen Moore and James Horwill.

Further compounding the Wallabies' woes were new injuries to winger Digby Ioane (knee), prop Ben Alexander (wrist) and back-up hooker Saia Faingaa.

34-year-old Sharpe, who had planned to retire after this year's Super Rugby competition, was asked to delay his retirement plans to lead the Wallabies on their end-of-year trip to Europe next month given the catalogue of injuries to senior players.

Robbie Deans, who has led the Wallabies to just three wins in 17 encounters with New Zealand since he became Australian rugby's first foreign coach in 2008, has urged his side to take the game to the All Blacks on Saturday.

"Nothing we bring will be of any surprise to them this weekend," he said.

"They've taken their game to another level, there's no doubt about that, as evidenced by the numbers.

"We've got to be better... and that's what we're chasing.

"At some point, to do well against them, you've got to take the initiative. You can't wait for it to land in your lap."

But Kiwi Deans knows New Zealand will also be "desperate" this weekend.

The Wallabies denied them a record-equalling 17th Test win in Hong Kong in 2010 and they will be mindful of falling short again, while it will also be hooker Keven Mealamu's 100th Test.

"We have looked at Australia and we know they have had hardships, quite a few injuries but they have got one or two back and they have got what would probably be the biggest forward pack they have ever put on the park," All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said.

"We know that when we get our opportunities we will have to take them."

Once the OZ's get their back room crap sorted and get key players back I think they will have a solid team. Not good enough to split games with the ABs (maybe win 2 or 3 from 10) BUT I think they have it in them to be a pretty clear number 2 team in the world. I guess we will have to see how they go in the NH. The ABs though are far and away the best team in the world and anyone with an ear to the ground in the domestic scene in NZ will no that the ABs are only gonna cement their #1 position over the next few years!!

ArmchairGeneral- Just looked it up. The winning run was 14 games starting on 23/03/02 vs Wales and ending on 23/08/03 against the same opposition. I think maybe people are thinking of the wins at home record which was 22 From 15/10/99 against Tonga to 06/09/03 vs France. Incidentally both of those runs ended with defeats in World Cup warm-up matches in 03. If only the competitive matches were counted i.e. 6N, WC, and Test matches, the winning run stretches to about 22 or 23 i think. What you also have to consider is that Englands 14 consistered of only 6N games and test matches v the likes of NZ and SA., where as the NZ record includes a WC on home soil with games against Canada, Tonga, and Japan. Still a good record to have though.

@chubbylugs: agree... at the time everyone was saying Eng was around/at 17 not 13. Very surprised if that was wrong. Some forgetful or young people here. Remember at the time glad to have lost it as don't need an unbeaten record on top of pressure to win a WC away in the homeland of a trinations country. Let me think who else has done that?

@whizz52

I've been wrong many times before, so probably am again, however I'm pretty certain it was France England lost to in a rwc warm up game.

Re the 17, must have been achieved by the group stage - whoops

It's not that the ABs are unbeatable. It's just the Wallabies can't win.

Despite all the comments and predictions, MIB will win by a max margin of 10!

OZ have nothing to loose and only pride to play for. At home they will also have the crowd behind.

However the realistic and knowledgeable OZ fan may worry about the trend of putting so many 30+ players on the field. Understandable that the injuries have left the team and squad depleted but this team is looking more like the cricket team.

When the Waughs, Warne, McGrath, and a few others retired en mass cricket Oz suffered a lot. While the old stagers played the team did well and became #1. Now they seem to lack direction in all formats.

It may be a better option to lose a few with guys who will serve the team more than a couple of years.

Chubbylugs you might want to go back and check your records the most the poms have done is 14 in 2003 and they lost to Wales.

I just don't see a blow out and if the AB are not on their game the Wobblies will push them close until the final 20...

Like the Saffas, no matter what team Oz field their pride will drive them to play hard!

Come on melkdave be realistic, that won't happen, you don't have to love the Wannabies to know that whoever takes the field they will have plently of spirit and they won't be broken like that. (although it's a nice thought)
