Misfiring: Scotland lineout

Scotland forwards coach Jonathan Humphreys has laid blame for Sunday's 28-6 trouncing in Ireland at the door of his misfiring pack.

The set-piece proved a constant source of frustration rather than quick ball for the visitor; Scotland lost one third of their own lineouts and scrummages, and former Wales hooker Humphreys was especially irked that the pain was largely self-inflicted.

"The forwards, generally across the board, were pretty average," said Humphreys.

"We're not going to hide away from that - there needs to be a significant improvement over these next eight weeks if we hope to be competitive in this tournament.

"Our inability to put points on the board comes around from us losing three out of our first five lineouts.

"It is very difficult to create any pressure when you release the valve like we did.

"The most disappointing thing is it came from nothing else but our own errors. If you want to tick over the scoreboard then you have to spend some time in the opposition half."
