If Ireland blame the ref for their performance then Ireland are looking for excuses. The ref could have binned the whole of the Irish backrow imo - they were getting desperate & it showed. Italy put them under pressure fair & square.

I just hate watching boring rugby, with the ball killed at the breakdown.

This is unfortunately the way Ireland (and Munster in particular) play.

Not that Italy is exciting, but at least they put more passion in the game and would have been great for them to win.

Poor handling is a consequence of the score, and Ireland was not comfortable with it. That's it. The pressure was felt.

Re the Boks, slowing the ball down is not safe against the Boks, Du Plessis, Botha, Burger and Smith are not waiting for the whistle to clean the ball.

Please do not complain about the ref, he was average, but he should have yellow carded Irish players before. The truth was that the scrum was dominated and that next Sunday does not look any better.

I'm South African. I live in Ireland. Our recent games with Ireland have been close... so I'm not really sure what you mean by blowing Ireland away.

I'm annoyed at Poite's terrible refereeing and at how boring the game was. Ireland weren't cynical really. They, and other sides, were much more cynical two years ago, but not so much now. Thankfully.

Anyway, even with the ref favouring Italy, Italy being at home, a poor player selection, terrible player management during the game by Kidney, Ireland's many mistakes and thrown away tries, 6 free points & extra territory for Italy from Poite, Italy still lost. So hard luck my friend. Better luck next time.

@ crunchfit.

I do not smoke and I do not drink, like you do apparently.

You are obviously frustrated that your cynical way of playing was not rewarded.

For us, when you play like this, it is not a problem at all, the Boks use to blow away your pathetic attempt to slow down the game easily and with pleasure.

Poite was brutal, particularly at the scrum. O'Leary was the wrong choice for this game. Shocking service in the first half.

Seriously, what are you smoking? The refereeing was abysmal. You said he would favour Ireland / Ireland couldn't have gotten a better referee (or something along those lines), but he couldn't have made any less favours in favour of Italy.

I will agree on you about O' Leary being a ball killer... for his own team. He takes forever to pass the ball out. Shouldn't be in the first 15, or on the bench. Kidney's Munster allegiances I guess...

It is fair to say that you usually make "uncharacteristic mistakes" when the result is not comfortable. Ireland looked dangerousin 2 or 3 occasions, but they also conceded opportunities to Italy. 13 infringements call for a quicker yellow card (O'Leary for instance, a professional ball killer at breakdown), no matters if you are clever enough to concentrate them outside the red zone. Italians are always penalised at the let's say third infringement. Otherwise good refereeing from Poite, just complacent with Irish cynical play at the breakdown and one or two calls at scrum which could have gone the other way.

Great performance from Italy. Hard to understand how a country with the best club side in Europe at present (which is almost entirely made up of Irish players) can deliver such a stuttering performance. O'Leary out, Stringer in for France. Leamy out even if neither Heaslip nor Ferris is fit. Argument for starting Court as well.

Italy can only get better and better, get the 9-10 combo down and you're looking at some serious contenders, maybe not for the championship, but they're going to push teams to the edge.

Fair play to Italy who played quite well in parts & scored a nicely-worked try - no longer the whipping boys ?
