New Zealand back-row Liam Messam admits he has enjoyed his "five-week sabbatical" but can't wait to take on Australia at Eden Park on Saturday.

Messam has not played since the Chiefs lost to the Brumbies in the Super Rugby knockouts, watching as the All Blacks kicked off their Rugby Championship campaign with a draw in Sydney.

But now back in the side at the expense of the injured Jerome Kaino, he's determined to hit the ground running when he turns out in Auckland.

"Five weeks seems a long time," he told NZ Newsire ahead of the Bledisloe Cup clash.

"I'm just chomping at the bit to get out there and I've had to pull the reins back this week because it's not game day till Saturday."

He added jokingly: "I got a five-week sabbatical".

"I think when you hit the age of 30, you start looking after your body a bit better."
