New Zealand fly-half Dan Carter was named Player of the Year in a clean sweep by the world champions at the IRB awards in London on Monday.
The All Blacks, unbeaten in 20 Tests since the start of last year's RWC before Saturday's loss against England, were named Team of the Year.
Meanwhile, head coach Steve Hansen won the Coach of the Year award in his first year as boss.
Carter claimed the personal award ahead of England's Owen Farrell, his All Blacks captain Richie McCaw and France's Frederic Michalak to the award, won last year by Thierry Dusautoir.
It was the second time the 30-year-old Carter, who this year returned from injury problems that saw him miss out on New Zealand's World Cup triumph, had won the IRB honour, following his success in 2005.
This was the third straight year New Zealand had won the team award, with Hansen keeping the coaching prize in the country following the back-to-back wins of World Cup-winning boss Graham Henry.
IRB chairman Bernard Lapasset presented McCaw with the team award and players' award on Carter's behalf at the World Cup pool draw in London, while Hansen received his award from IRB vice-chairman Oregan Hoskins.
"Dan Carter has bounced back from the disappointment of missing the majority of the (2011) World Cup through injury to show what a truly magnificent player he is and a wonderful ambassador for our sport," Lapasset said.
"Winning this award for the second time reflects his sheer talent and ability."

Jaystarr - I thought I watched all of the All Blacks games in 2012, but somehow I seemed to have missed the draw that you speak of. Can you enlighten me where and when that game was played? I am intrigued...

When you look at the list of persons whom are responsible for deliberating over whom wins the award its pretty hard for "US" the fans to be critical! Hey as supporters of a "particular" team I think that may pretty much disqualify us he he(as we wont be objective)..For me I thought Reid & Smith were our best players. The panel have watched "ALL" of the international fixtures in depth & me I have probably watched 8 AB's..matches and that's it! would you have me picking the POY?? No it would be like writing a review on a book when you have only read a 5th of its content.
@BWJC..It's player of the international season..not one game mate..How would you have it?? Carters had probably about maybe 6 very good games this year..Oz Twice,Argentina,SA,Scot,Ireland..Consistency is the name! 1 very bad game England) which I can live with Due to the amazing performance put in! but hey when England can string those types of performances consistently over a 10 year period (& not once every ten years) then we will see their players getting recognized at these awards

Jaystarr: this states it clearly enough
IRB Player of the Year Selection Panel and Criteria
The IRB Player of the Year nominees were selected by the IRB Awards independent panel of judges, which is chaired by Australia's RWC 1999 winning captain John Eales and is made up of former internationals with more than 500 caps and four Rugby World Cup winners' medals between them.
The panel have deliberated on every major Test played in 2012, starting with the opening RBS 6 Nations match and culminating with the November Internationals. In total they have watched around 100 hours of action, awarding points to the three players they thought stood out in each match.
Among those players unlucky to miss out on the shortlist are New Zealand number 8 Kieran Read, Australian duo Michael Hooper and Berrick Barnes, Scotland's Ross Rennie, Springbok wing Bryan Habana and Argentina's inspirational captain Juan Mart¿Fernandez Lobbe.

My nominees would have been Richie McCaw, Conrad Smith, Eben Etzebeth and Picamoles.
I would have gone with McCaw, he took it easy at the beginning of SR but he was the usual monster. Credit when it is due.
Carter is my favourite player, but he played too little rugby to overcome his captain.
Cruden is not test material yet.
Etzebeth and Picamoles have been outstanding for the Boks and France.
In the end, not a bad choice, but McCaw would have been my pick. And I am a Saffa...

@ kiwikev: I wouldn't have been too surprised if Colin Farrell was named on this list, but at least the panel drew a line at actors and only included Owen Farrell... ;P
@ thai-mai: How sure are you that this award only includes international appearances?
Because: by the end of last year Eben Etzebeth was an unknown 20-year-old playing Varsity Cup... He was then dragged into the Stormers team as a temporary replacement because they had an injury crisis at lock... However, he made such an impact that he ended up playing nearly every game for them from February to the semi-final in August and ended up being one of the players of the tournament... Which is also why he was drafted straight into the Springbok team by Heyneke Meyer, where he was one of the key players to help them beat England in a test series... He then went on to make his DEBUT for Western Province (which is normally a stepping stone before you even get to Super Rugby), where he helped them win the Currie Cup for the first time in 10 years... before returning to the Springbok squad for the remainder of the year, where he was consistently one of the key players (if not THE key player) who contributed to wins over Australia and Argentina, a draw against New Zealand and a 3-0 Autumn Series end-of-year tour. A tour on which we did not lose ONE line-out...
So if somebody can not be awarded "Player of the Year" by the IRB for a year like this, then the award means nothing I'm afraid.

Looking at previous recipients (Keith Wood: a notable exception) I'd love to see a front rower win the award - seems to be more of a popularity contest than a serious award -
Better yet they could split the award into a number of awards, seeing as it isn't really fair to compare a prop to a winger.

JayStarr - your argument . . . based on Super rugby when that tournament is not a part of this award, International test appearances are.
Carter played in nine of the AB tests. Yes he missed some, but then again several countries played only 10 tests this year, would you rule them out too?
I wouldn't have selected him, but again, I am not on the selection panel.

Well done DC the ABs and Mr Hansen but after Saturdays debacle it's sort of taken away the gloss, though out of the nominated list I would've picked Richie, but Read, Louw and Lobbe, & McCaw were my standouts this year and would have been my nominations.....

I'm a big DC fan but he didn't deserve this award - who cares if you have won it repeatedly, Richie was the standout player week in week out. For the position he plays and against the calibre of the opposition (international and domestic) he is head and shoulders above the rest of the nominees.

Isograford says.... He had a couple of good games
really? scored his 2012 total of 135 points in those two matches then?
Would not have been my choice, but then again i was not on the selection panel chaired by John Eales with Will Greenwood, Gavin Hastings, Raphaël Ibanez, Francois Pienaar, Agustín Pichot, Scott Quinnell, Tana Umaga and Paul Wallace.
