Brilliant England stun New Zealand

01st December 2012 16:22

England v New Zealand Conrad Smith Manu Tuilagi

Phenomenal: Manu Tuilagi

Delirium was the order of the day on Saturday at Twickenham as England defeated New Zealand 38-21 with three second-half tries.

New Zealand responded to a 15-0 defecit with scores from Julian Savea and Kieran Read, before England took charge thanks to three of their own from Brad Barritt, Chris Ashton and Manu Tuilagi in an astonishing second-half performance.

Owen Farrell endured a tumultuous week with being named as one of the best four players in the world, as if the pressure coming for England's most-capped player in Toby Flood wasn't enough. But the young Saracen flourished, showing great poise with the boot as he continued to tally up the points and steered England during the first half.

The All Blacks had been struck down by a vomiting bug during the week and despite Richie McCaw's claim that it would not affect them at Twickenham, New Zealand did not look themselves at all during the first 50 minutes as they were denied possession.

Julian Savea's try changed all of that; stepping his way through three England defenders in the left-hand corner to breathe life into the All Blacks. They flicked the switch and thundered forward from the re-start, sticking to their principles of running rugby and exploiting gaps that they left untouched in the first half.

England though were not simply going to fall down on their knees. Instead they roared back, thumping the All Blacks as the second half wore on. The rarest of breaks from Brad Barritt had the crowd roaring and a one-two with centre partner Tuilagi led to the hosts' first try.

Tuilagi then skipped through a tackle from Dan Carter to burst free, feeding Ashton who sprinted over for the second try. A Tuilagi interception then sealed the match, cruising home and slowing down as he neared the line as if he couldn't believe his luck. England were like a new team - the All Blacks were exhausted.

Whilst Carter missed two shots at goal in the first half, his fellow IRB Player of the Year nominee Farrell was accurate - knocking over two first-half penalties to give England a surprising 6-0 lead to the delight of the home crowd.

An overthrown lineout from Keven Mealamu resulted in another English driving maul before Tuilagi burst into the 22 and with the advantage being played, Farrell dropped back and stretched England's lead to nine.

Another infringement with seconds remaining left Farrell with another chance to strike before half-time, landing the 48 metre kick to leave the score at 12-0. Twickenham had never been more pleasantly surprised.

The run continued after the break with England winning a penalty at the scrum, Farrell again converting to leave New Zealand more than two converted tries behind the hosts.

Those tries duly arrived in two explosive bangs in the left-hand corner; the first coming from Savea then the second coming as the conclusion to some wonderful passing that left Read galloping into the corner before England scorched away. Savea responded with a try with only five minutes left but it was not enough as the All Blacks lost for the first time in 2012.

Man of the match: Two assists and one crucial interception try from Manu Tuilagi make him the player of the day.

Moment of the match: With New Zealand edging back into the match, Brad Barritt's score swung the momentum back in England's favour.

Villain of the match: The mystery bug that struck New Zealand earlier in the week. McCaw might have denied it would have an effect, but the All Blacks looked exhausted.

The scorers:

great result and, I hope, the culmination of some of the lessons learnt from the other two matches.

Personally, I think England should be encouraged by this autumn, I agree with McCaw and Hansen, the effects of the virus didn't show when they were chasing the game, perhaps complacency, perhaps the game may have taken a different complexion if Carter had hit his first two kicks.

My main worry for England is that we have a 6 nations now where we will face Wales and Ireland away from home both fixtures tend to attract the same increased physical intensity from the opposition that England showed today if we can pick up the championship great, the Grand Slam even better - anything less and this result is just a blip.

BTW to the trollery of posters various who extrapolate the results of a Rugby match into inane ruminations on national character traits do try and remember it is only a game. WW Ellis would be spinning six feet under if he could read some of the dunderhead comments from the IQ zeros that infest this otherwise fine site.

Have not seen the game yet and will post when I have. First congratulations to the English. Big win from them. Now they know what it takes to win against the best. This is great for Rugby as it spices up the whole pot. This win has turned around a pretty dull season. In the last few months we have seen Argentina, Samoa and even Tonga demonstrate they belong at the top level and deserve more regular major tests. OZ have played through an abysmal season with injuries and blooded a whole new group of players so they will be stronger in 2013. SA continue to dish up their ususal porridge and France look to be developing the consistency that has eluded them for twenty odd years.

The best bit is that England are developing a game that bears some resemblance to the game as it should be played not the dross that only Stephen Jones could love.

To the ABs we are all proud of you for setting the standard. This game proves you cannot win the them all. They have had a huge target on their backs for two years and finally they have been tagged. Now the challenge for the English is to regularly produce performances of this calibre. All of a sudden we can anticipate a far more competitive 2013. Well done England for finally marshalling your considerable resources.

Well I didn't expect that. I don't know if it was because it was the last game of a long test schedule, but no matter, the best team on the day won. Congrats England

Just proves a point - if a moderate England team can beat the all blacks, why not everyone else LOL

as a fellow human being (I think) I would like to apologise for rose tiger being an arse. It was a very entertaining game and I don't think any Nz players or coaches will blame the bug (let's be honest if they wanted they could have called up another 23 players who would still have been world beaters) England couldn't believe their luck and I doubt any team in the world would have been able to handle England's intensity today, they were brutal, dominant and efficient. Well played England, Well played the All Blacks (you've got to let one slide every now and then don't you? Or else everyone else will get bored of losing and quit) ;)

Congradulations to England, as a fan I don't mind seeing the AB's lose, especially when they are getting beaten at their own game. England did to the AB's what the AB's have been doing to others this year, by putting the pressure on and accumulating points.

Would have sucked to see England kick their way to victory. ZGood to see England injecting fresh and exciting talent into the team, well done.

Well put world wary... A bit of perspective. England are not world beaters yet and one game does not world champions make. England will have to consistent before they come even close. And they did lose the last two matches so lets not trumpet a new are yet.......

It was a very good game and nice to see England finally score tries. Personally I think the flu hit the ABs harder than they thought.. One can say its a "suzy" but it doesn't matter how many caps you have, no one plays 100% when you have the flu....Had England been struck down with the flu in NZ at the end of a long season then the excuses would fly from the English fans. NZ looked knackered and the sight of Tony Woodcock on the sidelines looking sick as said t all.......

@Heathy who says " there is potential and no reason to be so derogatory to a Southern Hemisphere team" Something very special happened today, but it fell short of the earth shifting on its axis....England remains in the NH as far as we know.
