Australia ended New Zealand's 16-match winning streak with an 18-all draw at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday.
Though honours were shared by the trans-Tasman rivals, Australia will treat this result as a mental victory seeing that Robbie Deans' troops weren't given a chance in hell of matching the All Blacks prior to kick-off.
In a match decided exclusively by penalties, Kurtley Beale and Mike Harris combined for 18 points for Australia, while Daniel Carter slotted six penalties for the All Blacks.
But with the scores locked at 18 points apiece at the death, the world champions were camped in the Australia's 22 and Carter was given one last opportunity to kick a drop-goal to hand the All Blacks victory.
His shot was just wide, however, and the match ended in a hard-fought draw.
New Zealand were bidding to join the 1969 All Blacks and 1998 Springboks with 17 successive victories but were once again foiled by the Wallabies, who ended New Zealand's unbeaten 15-match run in a 26-24 win in Hong Kong in 2010.
Harris was on great form in the first half, kicking all his four penalty goal attempts to give the under-strength Wallabies a 12-6 half-time advantage.
The Wallabies began well when they charged down a clearing kick in the opening seconds only for the ball to elude Adam Ashley-Cooper over the dead-ball line.
Carter kicked the All Blacks to a 6-3 lead before New Zealand came the closest to scoring in the first half through winger Hosea Gear. Israel Dagg's kick ahead was just forced dead by Harris with Gear in hot pursuit midway through the half.
Wallabies' blindside flanker Scott Higginbotham could be in hot water after his scuffle with All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw. Higginbotham appeared to knee McCaw in the head to trigger the skirmish before appearing to head-butt the All Blacks skipper on the ground. Both players were cautioned by referee Craig Joubert.
Joubert made good on his warning of 'next one goes' when he gave All Blacks prop Tony Woodcock a yellow card for repeated ruck infringements on the half-time siren.
Harris kicked his fourth penalty to give the Wallabies a six-point buffer at the turnaround. Beale lifted the Wallabies' confidence even further with a prodigious penalty from just inside his own half for a 15-6 lead.
But Carter kicked his third penalty and the Wallabies lost openside flanker Michael Hooper to the sin-bin after taking out All Blacks scrum-half Aaron Smith after he had kicked ahead.
Carter then pulled New Zealand to within three points with the resulting penalty in the 56th minute.
Australia lost a line-out on their throw giving the All Blacks possession inside their quarter and they mounted successive mauls before they received a penalty for Carter to level the scores at 15-15 with 13 minutes left.
New Zealand got the big breakthrough when Adam Ashley-Cooper spilled Aaron Cruden's high kick and Nick Phibbs was in an off-side position in picking up the ball for an All Blacks penalty.
Carter kicked his sixth penalty nine minutes from time to edge New Zealand in front and in sight of victory. But Harris levelled with his fifth penalty with five minutes left in what proved to be the final score.
Man of the match: Kurtely Beale was Australia's most dangerous player and skipper Nathan Sharpe led from the front, but Kieran Read once again loomed large for the All Blacks. The number eight was heavily involved throughout and deservedly named the official man-of-the-match at Suncorp Stadium.
Moment of the match: Geez, take your pick! But in the end it just has to be Carter's last-gasp drop-goal attempt.
Villain of the match: Two yellow issued - one to Tony Woodcock and the other to Michael Hooper. But the real villain that got away was Scott Higginbotham after his headbutt on Richie McCaw.
The scorers:
For Australia:
Pens: Beale 2, Harris 4

Great game! Lots of drama, bad calls by both teams, great guts by both teams and a courageous battle to the end. If Carter was successful at the end, it would have been an injustice to the Wallabies. One record gone, next record of 23 unbeaten tests next in target. Wales and England have genuine chances, so its gonna be an interesting tour!

and
APV1 how about that a draw, 6 penalties apiece, no tries, a drop kick attempt to win the game at the death, you must be salivating, just like a real Saturday arvo at Twickers.

Congrats to the Wannabies and as suggested before they did produce a performance of guts and grit and smart rugby to nullify the AB's attack. They showed more of that than many of their fans and to those calling a 40-60 point win to the AB's please take time to understand the game and the nature of these games between the two best rugby playing countries in the world. So much for the dead rubber, meaningless game etc. I almost got it right (AB's by 1), not sure anyone saw the draw I don't even know what the odds were. To those claiming that the Wannabies should have won, well not so sure, the AB's really played all the rugby and probably left 3 tries on the park, the Wannabies hardly threatened the line but played the game they needed to play. The AB's (as has been shown before) when pressured, can make mistakes and the Wannabies sure pressured them. As a Kiwi you cannot be too disappointed (sniff sniff) it been a pretty good season but it would have been nice for Mealamu's 100th to get the win. On Kevvy, nice touch at the end with presentation from the Wannabies, I cannot recall that ever having been done before.
The best thing the ARU can do now is appoint Dingo through until after 2015, no coach in the world could have got that result given the circumstances the Wannabies have faced this year. To all those clowns calling for his head (you know the G Smith's and Trinats of this world) crawl back under your rock where you belong.
What is it with Queenslanders (sorry Trinats you can't give Cooper back now) Higginbotham's action was a disgrace which should see him left at home for the NH tour, just what his team mates need, what a plonker.

Can't ABs say its an unbeaten record not a successive victories record and chalk up number 18... Did South Africa or Lithuania go down to a draw? I doubt it.

@Toulousain
I have to echo your sentiments. After yet another abysmal refereeing performance from Rolland last night, it was so refreshing to see Craig Joubert's masterful performance. He is my favourite referee in world rugby and he bring such joy back to the game. A model of consistency and accuracy. Someone give this guy a medal or money or even a hug, just anything good!

Just think. Richie gets a knee to the head and instead of brushing it off as he tends to. It ends his playing days and like old boxers they have to teach him to feed himself again. Then will it still be a 2 week ban? IRB has to make these sorts of things a thing of.the past with penalties that are too guresome to confront so mindless thugs think twice before attacking a players head.

If memory serves me correctly the All Blacks hold the World Cup, Bledisloe Cup, Rugby Championship trophy, they're unbeaten this year and they drew with the (current) 2nd best team in the world away from home... so how does this in any possible way translate to a negative for New Zealand?

Regardless this has to Be the most dominant all black side. 87 all blacks did this. Held on to the old boys and were out done in the following World Cup against oz. hope this doesn't happen again.

did we just witness the best refereeing performance anyone has seen in a test match for a long time? can we also look forward to the least argumentative/hostile commentary by our collectice selves in a while? are the two linked? or is it because it was draw.... dead rubber.... last game of season.... old respected frenemies....
oh well, at least we can argue about the higginbotham knee. that must have added some spice to the post match drinks hehehe!!

Quite right, why didn't they go for the drop?
If it had missed, end of game. As it was they nearly gave the game away.

It would not have been a new record, only equaling the current one.

Well done Wallabies, only negative the Cooper wannabe ,Higginbotham, who spoilt an otherwise gutsy performance by his team who didn't need his rubbish. He'll "get sorted" no doubt, but he just hurt his team's chances again for the NH tour. But again well done Wallabies, you certainly surprised me.

Wallabies Win??? what an incredible statement of non-fact. Actually, it was theWaanabies that were staring at DEFEAT before the games end you muppet.
Anyway the UNdefeated ABs played as poorly as they ever have in their seemingly endless dominance of world rugby. Perhaps it is for the best that they can now re-focus on the NH tour without that particularl monkey on their back. Then again the 1987-91 ABs record of 23 Tests (50 games) Undefeated has not yet been bested......?

I mentioned earlier in the week that if the game had the chaos factor that meant the Wallabies would be in it and they were. Great fight from Aussies. Tension was high all the way through. However as a game of Rugby it was average in the extreme. The number of high level games these days dominated by Ref's egos is a worrying trend.
Were both sides so hopeless as to cough up 20 penalties between them? Plus 2 in the bin? The Ref stepped in so early in so many situations he just about throttled the life out of the game. Hardly an advertisement for the game and this is meant to be the best 2 teams in the world.
