I agree with the idea of playing a mid-week team..... imagine Munster v ABs or even Llanelli Scarlets v ABs. Whilst no longer having the significance of a match played in the amateur era, such matches are still memorable. The ABs still have the ability to pull in big crowds.... I watched them in the late 1980s playing the Welsh Club teams. There was nothing like being at a small ground in South Wales watching some of rugby's great players of that era. Llanelli v Seland Newydd and 9-3 need I say any more! Sadly, for a number of reasons professional rugby has seen the demise of such matches!
The ABs playing Georgia or Romania would also be useful for the growth of the sport internationally. However, rugby is now in the business of making money and has therefore restricted itself to more traditional rivalries in order to fill stadia with paying customers.

bk47 says...I love that idea of a mid-week match v a Georgia or Romania etc on a Northern Tour, as well as a club game. Also for the club players who may not make international level gives them some great memories.
I don't want the mid-week games to against "Barbarians" teams, it must be against Munster or Harlequins or Bath or Toulouse etc, something that means something to people, the locals, some history, not a cobbled together team

@ArmchairGeneral, I don't think Scotland really qualify as one of the teams that don't get a tour ans should, it is more about Russia, Georgia, Portugal, etc.
I do, however, think that there is merit in NZ, Aus and SA touring the 6 nations sides as it is useful for them to get more experience playing in northern hemisphere weather, etc.

Yeah the schedule is boring and repetitive but because of the need for money it has to be done sadly.
However I see no harm in taking a larger squad and maybe having some mid-week games against the likes of georgia, romania etc. I do think if the IRB and the bigger nations want to expand the game they do need to do a little more than what they're currently doing

Agree a tour of one country with mid week games against the top clubs would be brilliant. Leicester beat the Boks. We still talk of the Munster win over the ABs... Those tours are just fantastic. Also I gives test teams a chance to get to really know their opponent. 2nd tests are often very winnable for the side that lost the first. And the tactical changes gives you a real view on how diverse the game can be from one week to the next at the very top.
Don't agree the juniors should tour. Giants of the North, Scotland are chasing the grand slam with only ABs to beat. We should never accept the juniors; that's admission of defeat for good. AB squad tour combined with an NZ Maori would be a first and huge. Impossible to fit in if done properly but would be huge. Commercially very rewarding too.
ABs in England whilst Maori tour Wales... No doubt Wales fans will want that reversed.

Good ideas here but this is about the cash. ABs fill up the stadiums. I don't think the home unions share the cash either so maybe a development side would be a good idea. That and playing on wet, cold nights to suit the TV audience in Europe are two aspects that need remedy.

markpat - my loony idea was in terms of rugby development, the 'putting something back' people are fond of talking about but rarely ever do.
I don't think ABs v Eng does anything for the spirit of global rugby other than make some money. Football makes more of an effort to play 'friendlies' than rugby ever has.

What benefit would realistically be gained from the world champions touring sides that already played in the world cup and got beaten badly?
A better idea would be for the winners of the World Junior Championship to make that tour.
It would give good experience to the youngsters of international rugby, while also giving a more competitive match for the host nations, yet still playing against some of the players who may well go on to play international rugby at senior level.

Today's lunatic suggestion that will never happen, wouldn't it be great if the year after an RWC the winner of that tournament traveled to a few of the countries in the bottom 10 of the RWC qualifiers? The All Blacks in Georgia! Romania!
Subsidised by the RWC Ltd profits.
Instead, tired players on both sides playing the same tired old matches in front of possibly some tired fans.
and, yawn, just before they head north there's a test v Australia October 20 in Brisbane, just because they can. Presume it's a (potential) Bledisloe Cup decider as is not part of the series with Oz/SA/Arg?
