Johan Goosen: Tore knee ligaments

Springbok fly-half Johan Goosen's season is over after he tore knee ligaments in Saturday's Rugby Championship loss to the All Blacks.
Goosen will see two more specialists on Tuesday, after the first two doctors who examined him differed on whether or not he needed to have an operation immediately.
If the operation goes ahead, he will be out of action for close to six months, but if there is no surgery, he will be sidelined for six weeks and is therefore unlikely to play any part in the Springboks' end-of-year tour.
Free State Cheetahs team doctor Ian Morris said Goosen would be "very lucky" to play again this year.
"He's done his medial collateral ligaments and we picked that up on the MRI scan, but the lucky thing is that none of the other ligaments have been damaged," he told Supersport.
"We've decided to get a few more specialists to give an opinion before we decide if we need to operate or not.
"Regardless of whatever course of action is decided, I feel he would be very lucky to make the end-of-year tour. I could be wrong but with these types of injuries, it is never a good idea to rush a player."
Morris said Goosen told him he sustained the injury during an unfortunate clash of bodies during the game.
"He said it was when a player's body fell onto the front part of the knee during the close clashes in the game," he revealed.
Morris said if it was decided to operate, then Goosen would go under the knife "within a day or two" in Bloemfontein so that the recovery process can begin almost immediately.

It's a pity, but I can't help but think that the whole team depended on him much more than they should have done in Soweto. If they step up a gear on the November tour without him in tow it bodes well for next season. I hope Meyer calls on P. Grant or gives Lambie some game-time at 10 instead of recalling Steyn.

Personally, I'd start Lambie at 10, in his absence and keep Janties on the bench for now.

I feel for the kid but some here that think it's all HM and the medical staffs fault needs to reevaluate their stance. I mean if you are playing for you're country and you know you're not 100% then it's up to you to tell the medical staff or coach so and step down. Johan knew his leg was buggered even before he stepped on the pitch just like he knew with the previous game that he was taking a risk playing with a shot ankle. They kept him in that game with the auzzies at his request. Sometimes you've got to swallow you're pride and step down. You're not going to gain anything from trying to appear tough when you're injured no you're going to let you're team down and only worsen the injury. His young and with his talent he'll get plenty of chances thats if he doesn't bugger his body by being stupid.

@Rugbymad
Interesting point about the 10 minutes. I agree with you about player management, with the proviso that Meyer may not have known how bad Goosen's injury was (even Goosen might not have known).
But I don't agree with this: "".then they brought on a complete rookie in Elton Jantjies to compete against Dan Carter the best flyhalf in the world. Morne Steyn should have been on the bench.""
Jantjies had his own game to play, irrespective of who was opposite him. First-fives don't oppose each other that much, especially not Carter who, these days, after all his injuries, doesn't run that much.

Sad. The randomness of injuries can be bad for the national game, but for the individual it is devastating.
Let's hope he gets to fulfil his potential.
It seems that the Cheetahs doctor is very sensible, in any event, so that he shouldn't be rushed back before he is ready. It is that which does the most damage.

Can anyone say "rushed back too soon"?
You can't expect a player to be off the rugby field for 6 months, then have them play one and a quarter match before you throw them into a test. Even professional bodybuilders and powerlifters understand that no matter how many years of training and experience, your body needs to be eased back into the stresses and strains you place on it after you've been off for even a few weeks. It is called detraining - it's a physiological concept/fact as important as over-training. If you don't take it into consideration, it is going to come back and bite you in the a...
I feel very sorry for the guy. His coach at the Cheetahs, Naka Drotske, said loud and clear "don't pick him yet - he is not ready", but HM picked him. So the blame should go to HM and his medical staff who did not do their job. I mean, he was actually let onto the field in both tests already carrying an injury! That was their irresponsibility and now this poor guy has to pay the price.
Tough luck Johan. Hopefully you don't struggle to get back into form next year. Just stick with the Cheetahs, you at least have a coach there who really cares about your well-being.

Tough luck and bad management but an opportunity for Jantjies.

@rolf and daibok, I echo your thoughts...
Bring Peter Grant into the picture. Give him the end of year tour as a acknowledgment of years of consistant value...what the heck, whilst we are stumbeling around in the dark we might as well ask Butchie to come out of retirement and cloths-line a few candidates just for some excitement...Go Bokke!

He started the game with that knee quite heavily strapped---clearly he already had a problem which was then aggravated during the collision. He was then obviously limping around in pain and should have been immediately taken off. He should probably never have started. While he was limping around unable to play the All Blacks got their backline firing and the game turned then and there. Incompetent management--never a surprise with South Africa. He will hopefully recover well as he shows signs of exceptional talent--but a suggestion-:-he should not ever take medical advice from the Springbok rugby establishment in future.

I really wish you people would give Elton Jantjies a break, what exactly did he do that was so bad. For f**ks sake give the dude a far shot I thought for his first time out he played quite well. He needs time to develop and gain confidence how can he do this when he just gets bagged left, right and centre. Go play in Oz Elton and change your surname to flatley hahaha

A big blow for the Goose but as one door closes, another opens as they say, this is an oportunity for Elton Jantjies to proove himself, personally, I think he is as good as Goosen.

He was on the field with torn ligaments for 10 minutes. This must be one of the worst incidence of player mismanagement .then they brought on a complete rookie in Elton Jantjies to compete against Dan Carter the best flyhalf in the world. Morne Steyn should have been on the bench.

On one hand I feel sorry for him, as his momentum has been broken.
But, on the other hand, this break is a good balance between forgetting any mistakes he made this season and getting himself motivated for next season.

That sucks, for SA and the Goose. On the bright side Taute (I think it was) who came off the bench against the blacks was pretty good and there's always Lambie at 10.
