Two-week ban for Greyling

Dean Greyling having a run for Springboks

Greyling: Suspended for two weeks

Springbok prop Dean Greyling has been suspended for two weeks for a forearm smash to the face of All Blacks captain Richie McCaw in Saturday's Rugby Championship match in Dunedin.

Greyling will miss the Springboks' next match, against Australia in Pretoria on September 29.

He admitted hitting McCaw in the 64th minute of Saturday's clash, which was won by the All Blacks 21-11, when he appeared before SANZAR judicial officer Paul Tully on Sunday.

"Greyling, whilst in the process of cleaning out at a ruck, recklessly used his forearm such that he made contact in a dangerous way with the head of New Zealand player Richie McCaw," Tully said.

"Although there was no injury complained of, the action had potential to cause serious injury."

Lock Eben Etzebeth, who was banned for two weeks for a headbutt in their previous Test against Australia, will be back for the return match.

Springbok's coach Heyneke Meyer apologised to McCaw after the match and said Greyling's behaviour had cost them the game.

"We're a team that prides ourselves on discipline and we can't afford these things in games," Meyer said.

Skipper Jean de Villiers also said Greyling would face internal action.

"We'll never condone playing dirty," de Villiers said.

And which side of the ruck was Mccaw lying when the thug Greling left his feet towards McCaw that was intent to injure a player while on his backside should be

out for the rest of the season even his coach had apologised for his stupidity

im stunned. not only should it have been a red not yellow. he should be out for minimum 10 weeks. if the SA coach and captain are publicly condeming the action then you know it was a disgustingly gutless and thuggish thing he did.

Richie was nowhere near the ball so it wasn't even clearing out. Absolute disgrace but at least he got a ban which is more than the thugs Hartley and Powell got when they lead with their elbows into McCaw's head or Cooper got last year for his cheap shot.

@Up_and_under: I agree, it did not seem to phase him much, probably because he wasn't expecting it. If that is the case you could argue that he most likely did enter the ruck from behind the last mans feet; it would have been very naive of him to transgress and not expect some form of reprisal in the opposition 22. Plus he would have made a bigger meal out of the strike and appealed to the touch judge, so I think it's fair to say he was in the right.

@ JayStarr - regardless of this article, you are plain bonkers, my friend. It's kind of endearing, really. Like taking my elderly grandmother out for lunch - she has no idea what's going on, but still seems to enjoy herself. ;-)

@ MacTavish - Hear! Hear! Habana should have let the TJ and ref make the decision, rather than cheat. I understand why a cricketer might not walk until given out, despite it being a barn-door decision, but that's not cheating - that's playing to the Umpire's decision. This was nothing more than poor sportsmanship.

I must say that it's good to read the saffa comments, vilifying his behaviour. Whether Richie was off-side or not, is beside the point - it's for the officials to take the necessary action. If the officials are missing something, it's for the captain to have a quiet word and ask them to keep an eye out. It's not for someone to take the laws into their own hands.

The funniest thing for us kiwis and the most embarrassing thing for that jelly bean of a rugby player (Greyling), is that his shot hardly phased McCaw. So I really think that SANZAR are for punishing him for not being able to do the job properly and that only giving him 2 weeks clearly states that he has a pi$$ weak punch which aint much of a danger to any one

@ Realbull

You say: ""Justice served! Greyling banned for 2 weeks and Mcaw has a head ache, he will think twice next time before lying on the wrong side of ruck.""

But McCaw was on his own side of the ruck! Did you even see the incident?

Realbull, there is no excuse for Greyling's actions, though you say they dealt justice to McCaw. Shame on you. Though other South Africans here have condemned Greyling, you have shown yourself no better than him.

As for the judiciary, ruling that Greyling's and Eben Etzebeth's actions were equally reprehensible, well, I say the judiciary has brought the game into disrepute. Again.

Etzebeth must be feeling aggrieved, Greyling delighted.

MacTavish says...

And I find the whole McCheat jibe a little sour on here... Lets see, circa 35 mins into the test NZ cleared for the line. CLEARLY the replay showed the ball slipping through Bryan Habanas hands to land outside of touch. What did one Mr Habana do? He motioned to the Line Judge who then signalled kick out on the full. So either Bryan has no feeling in his hands or he clearly mislead the touchie and gained about 35m from a dishonest call. Great Sportsmanship. Or in plain english HE CHEATED! So before you toss the who McCheat phrase round, check how honest your own players are?

For the Record, if a Number 7 doesnt push the law to see how much he can get away with, then quite frankly he is rubbish. Burger, Pocock etc, all do so Blah Blah Blah, SUCK IT UP!

Am willing to bet a 1000 big ones , this guy Tully is a Lawyer and one previouslyu used by the mob !!!!

the wording of the judgement lacks logic, which is a common trait among lawyers (am sure people have heard of the story where a lawyer argued the color white is actually black!).

....recklessly used his forearm...

....made contact in a dangerous way with the head ....

and then

....action had potential to cause serious injury....

is he implying that

the forearm can be used carefully? (like when a girl supports her face posing for a photograph :) )

there can be harmless contact on the head with the forearm? (like getting a Thai Massage , which for a while actually hurts!!)

but at the same time both the above can cause serious injury !!

that is what happens when couch potatoes who hold golf balls try to understand violence in RU .LOL

joker of first degree.

I have learnt to laugh at the bloggers who go on about McCaw getting what he deserves (although most also thankfully don't condone the act itself) - I really do think that a lot of the diatribe is pure jealously that they don't have as consistent a performer as McCaw in their own team. In this instance McCaw appeared to enter the ruck legally, he was on his feet for as long as possible making a nuisance of himself, meaning he's legal as long as he's bound in, he does go to ground (which is not penalisable in itself) and a prat of a prop comes in with pure thuggery and smashes him with a forearm. It was clearly with the aim of hitting him with the forearm - it was stupidity of the highest order. I think he should have got a month, partly for the sheer thuggery of this extremely dangerous act, which could have broken a jaw or worse...and partly for being so stupid as to do it in such an obvious manner. He deserves to not be on the pitch for all of that.

Awesome forearm smash.. which belongs in pro wrestling, like Jimmy Superfly Snuka used to do, not in rugby though! Thanks Boks, you have some memorable dirty play in international rugby, I think its your aggressive style of rugby that I appreciate...a little less of the pro wrestling me think though!

Watch the incident again and you will see that McCaw was involved in the original tackle and was not lying on the wrong side, it's obvious that you allowing your envy of McCaw and the ABs to cloud your judgement.
