Dean Greyling: In the dock

Springbok prop Dean Greyling has been cited for alleged foul play during Saturday's 21-11 loss to the All Blacks in Dunedin.

Greyling is alleged to have contravened Law 10.4 (a) punching or striking, when he made contact with New Zealand captain Ritchie McCaw with his arm in the 64th minute of the match.

Referee George Clancy issued a yellow card for the incident. Upon further review of the match footage the citing commissioner deemed in his opinion the incident had met the red card threshold for foul play.

The citing is to be considered in the first instance by SANZAR Duty judicial officer Paul Tully.

@rakavi187: Also, have you had a stroke? Brian Lima is your example of an righteous rugby player?

@rakavi187: You need a course in adult literacy, read the post again. I never condoned what Greyling did to your boyfriend and I've posted so on two other threads.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy........and I mean McCaw!! About time someone did that, might make him think twice before he deliberately cheats again. If more players did that (as the refs do nothing about it) maybe McCaw would play within the rules of the game. Yah right!!!!!!!

Thank you.

Enjoyed a couple of beers in the evening and hope you did as well

By it's nature the breakdown is an area of controversy and difficult to always get right by the referee. Even more difficult for the fans who tend to see things in relation to their desire to win and in the heat of the moment. Looking at the replay sometimes shows another picture.

Putting aside Greylings forearm there was nothing particulary inconsistent about the refs interpretation or ruling of this breakdown in comparison to his others in this game and in regards to being in favour of one team more than the other.

Lets hope for some good games in the next few weeks without any more silly incidents.

@ Phillipjfry

You're as dumb as Greyling, if not more. Yes, rugby is a contact sport...that means hard running & hard tackling...not cowardly throwing your forearm into someones head while defenceless on the ground.

What Greyling did only proved that most Bokkes try to act tough but are really cowards... you want true contact rugby, refer to Brian Lima's tackle on Hougaard.

NZ won this game, they deserved it ad they did nothing wrong.

If the opposition blows the chances they got, what can NZ do?

Ref's calls were not a factor. Just pointing out that the breakdown is an area of concern as it is often administered inconsistently. Let's agree to disagree on this and let's move on. Remember your post match beer.

Again hat off to McCaw for the way he behaved with cool head, I would have been furious against the assaulter.

Greyling is an idiot - he is a pathetic scrummager, as has been pointed out many times on this site, and is a liability with his discipline. But he happens to come from a certain province, as does the coach. He should never have been picked and hopefully the selectors now accept the proof why.

Who are the citing commissioners?

Greyling why not bring the refs attention to it next time, that was a cheap shot and deserves a two week ban. I do however find it funny that McCaw didn't bring his hands up to protect himself ... must have been firmly placed on the ball while he was off his feet.... and the touch ref didn't see that.. Steyn and Pienaar pack your bags and your mate Meyer wont be far behind, we could have won that. NZ aren't that good. wonder how Lambie would do at scrum half , He is quick, can think and is great in defence.????

What is hard to understand is how you could claim McCaw should have been penalised for entering from the wrong side to start with when that is clearly incorrect.

Please do explain that?

Perhaps it is you with a serious medical condition like very poor eyesight and or perhaps you were drunk or simply don't understand the rules.

Admiral comments about his self control, leadership and the red card but why ruin them with your continual bleating about NZ cheating.

Wallaroo is right about him being an annoying bastard for the opposition and so is any really good player.

I wouldn't say McCaw never cheats and sometimes he gets away with it and other times he gets penalised just like many South African, NZ, worldwide players get away with things.

In this incident very borderline.

Carpelone says...

Wallaroo.

I agree with you. McCaw is not a cheat but a frustrating bastard, with a serious medical problem, he faints at the breakdown and falls inadvertently in offside (Read is good too at this).

But don't try to be reasonable with a bunch of drunk kiwis, they will never understand.

I was about to say that I was quite impressed by the his selfcontrol in that situation, a true leader and a captain.

i think 2 week ban is a joke and Greyling should have been red carded immediately on the spot. I hope not to see him gain in a Bok jersey.

@jonesy2: If we are typically filthy then the majority of you kiwis are typically whiny. Man up it's a contact sport, not like you got struck in the face anyway. Plus he's been cited and heartfelt apologies have been duly delivered, what more do you want?

Once a cheat, always a cheat. R. McCaw is a cheat. How can he or anyone say it was okay for him to be sitting in the ruck? There is just one rule... get out of the way, clear the ruck and stop being lazy in trying to kill the game. R. McCaw was not even making any effort to get out of it. He was just caught with his pants down. It surely deserved a yellow card. Wake up referees!

McCheat lol. Rugby is all about who can cheat the best and he is the best. I'm sure Richies jaw felt fine lifting the cup at the end of the game. When are the boks going to start playing rugby? Maybe if they get out of the Bulls mentallity and back themselves.

Wallaroo says...

Carpelone, agree with you on the red card. Funny how the Kiwi's never picked that up which demonstrated your disdain for Greylings actions.

Understand that you were trying to explain what you believed the reason to be and yes there are always reasons why people do things, doesn't make them right or acceptable. It's a well known fact that McCaw plays on the fringe, most other players are aware of this and know that they need to provision accordingly - this doesn't make McCaw a cheat but a frustrating bastard if you are on the opposing side.

7ton... You are exactly right! However you will never sway the "we lost because McCaw is a cheat" mentality of some of the posters on this board. Finger pointers that refuse to accept loss in a dignified way. I'm certainly not saying that this refers to all SA/Aus supporters but certainly there are a few that bleat on about McCaw to the point of nausea.

porridge_time says...

McCaw did not enter from the wrong side Carpelone and you are trying to jusitify an act of foul play. McCaw was on of the original tackler who arguable could have been penalised for not rolling away... but if you look at it again he is sitting there with his legs trapped, Greyling came in late and deliberatedly forearmed him in the face. At least six weeks ban.

South Africa really need to cut this type of thuggery out.

Funny how people like to complain about Richie supposedly being offside. If he was, the refs would call it. Maybe you should actually watch the matches. The Boks are consistently offside when the ruck is formed and the refs never call. Watch them scramble like ants to get back onside. The Boks are the dirtiest team out there when it comes to playing. It's about time they faced the music. No excuse for dirty play, just because you're losing. The Boks are sore losers, period.
