Glasgow Warriors' Stuart Hogg has been urged to inflict damage on inter-city rivals Edinburgh when the pair meet on Boxing Day.

The clash at Murrayfield on Thursday is the first of back-to-back derbies between the two Scottish pro teams, with the 1872 Cup at stake as well as vital Pro12 points.

In undoubtedly the fixture's biggest talking point, Hogg shifts from his usual full-back position to outside centre, partnering Alex Dunbar in midfield.

Sean Maitland is filling the void left by the 21-year-old at 15.

Warriors boss Gregor Townsend admits the move is designed to hurt Edinburgh as often as they can.

"We want Stuart to get on the ball as much as possible and playing him at outside centre is one way to do that," Townsend told the Daily Record.

"He has excellent basic skills. His passing, kicking and runs on to the ball are all fantastic.

"He has played 10, 13 and 15 so as the game goes on he can step up to become first receiver as well as an auxiliary full-back.

"Adaptability is key. I love players who can play in as many positions as possible. We have two or three that can do that, such as Richie Vernon who can play centre too. I see it as a big strength.

"From my time in France, they really rated guys who could play in more than one position."
