Moving to midfield: Richie Vernon

Glasgow Warriors and Scotland international Richie Vernon has made the positional switch from back-row to outside centre.

He will wear the number 13 jersey for the first time on Friday in the British & Irish Cup.

Vernon will feature for Stirling County, when they face Nottingham away.

After returning to the club on a three-year deal during pre-season from Sale Sharks the 26-year-old says he's excited about the change of position, having discussed the matter at length with head coach Gregor Townsend.

"Gregor said I should give it a go and from my point of view I feel that if I don't give it a chance it would be something I might regret," Vernon told the Warriors website.

"It's a new challenge for me and I've been training with the backs for two weeks now. I'm excited to see what it's going to be like.

"The coaches see me as an outside centre and that's where I'll initially be playing.

"There are a lot of similarities between back-row and centre. The basics such as running lines and carrying ball in traffic is where I should be able to make an impact straight away because it's quite transferable. In open play back-rows find themselves at centre quite a lot.

"I'm hoping to get as much game time as I can at Stirling County and see where it goes from there and obviously if it goes well I'll hopefully be able to break into the Glasgow team."
