Murrayfield: Set for name change?

According to BBC Scotland, the home of Scottish Rugby, Murrayfield, could be set for a name change in the hope of increasing revenue for the Union.
Like the Emirates Stadium (Arsenal), Coca-Cola Park (Lions), Sports Direct Arena (Newcastle) and AAMI Stadium (Rebels), Scotland may follow suit.
SRU chief executive Mark Dodson informed the BBC of the financial boost it may provide as he looks to succeed in his four-year strategic plan.
"The single biggest piece of our inventory is our national stadium, we would like to see if we can monetise that," he said.
"We're looking at trying to bring money in across our inventory.
"We want to be sympathetic about how we do it.
"We want to get the right price for it, it would be crazy for us not to look at using our single biggest piece of inventory to drive revenue.
"It depends on how you pitch and what goes in the package, but it's millions of pounds a year."

Thinking about it commercially because cash is king (but I don't like stadiums being renamed) something similar to the Qantas Wallabies or the St George Reds might prove less controversial ...? The "Irn Bru Jocks ... Made from Girders" has a ring to it ...

WestPac Stadium in Wellington is known to everyone as the Cake Tin... the name is actually irrelivant and if it raised funds to help grow the game in Scotland then go for it.
Simon Taylor is no longer test material and Euan Murray is too busy counting fairies to be fully available for selection.

If Johnnie Walker was the primary sponsor of the stadium I could be okay with it.

@ 5Lock4ward... its a disgrace how many non qualified players Edinburgh has signed when we have only two teams. Now we have only a single scrum half starting first tier pro rugby, and no reserve props. There was talk of asking NZ for uncontested scrums if our last prop gets injured... before the game. Absolutely disgrace. Get rid of Bradley now... he is wrecking Scottish rugby

Well we have to pay off the debt somehow. Lets face it, to fans and players it will always be Murrayfeild, its just in official announcements they will have to use the the new name. After a few years when the debt is cleared, we can change it back to Murrayfeild with little damage done.

should we just copy and paste all the rants re All Blacks 'selling out' for sponsorship? Are they cheapening the history of the ground name?
Good luck to them. Who was Murray, anyway?

@fozza lol but with the Royal Bank of scotland now a discredited institution they could never ask for their name.
Did you see that word the chie executive used? My my English has come a lonf way. The mind boggles. The word? Why "monetise," no less.

when it was announced that the redeveloped Lansdowne road was going to be called the Aviva Stadium i like many other Irish rugby fans refused to call it this. But then after seeing it and how impressive it was i changed my mind and will give Aviva recognition for helping build such an impressive and modern stadium (bar the north stand)

Poor Scotland!!! Listen, folks... don't worry. The savages that are running our professional sport these days don't give a toss for tradition. The I.R.F.U. agreed a ten-year deal to rename the oldest functioning rugby in the world ground after an insurance company. However, to all Irish rugby people it remains Lansdowne Road.
They can order journalists to call it what they like for a set fee, but they can't make the people tow the line.

Instead of renaming the stadium they should be focused on using the limited number of playing positions offered to them by their meager 2 professional franchises for Scottish qualified players. Maybe bring back Border Reivers; growing the player pool of the national team and appeasing those who are against 100% Scottish participation in the Heineken Cup. If they're so concerned with revenue they should stop producing one ugly jersey after the other. It's been since the '07 RWC that they've had a jersey a fan would be proud to buy and wear. The fact that they didn't immediately address whatever problem is causing Simon Taylor to take himself out of contention shows that they're not concerned about the product on the pitch. Not to mention that someone in the SRU has forgotten to remind Andy Robinson that Euan Murray is available for selection.
