Hahaha! All the stats about margins and arguments about closing gaps... The reality is that the NH teams lost to SH teams that had less than a week together in prep. Wait until the Boks and AB's have had time to gel under their new coaches - the slaughter is going to be horrific.

Three tests and best they could manage was a dismal 14 all draw. Surely SL would be better suited to saying nothing until he has actually coached a sided that consistently beats the SH sides... because all he is doing is making a fool of himself.

Interesting, it's like you can't google. Why not just check it out yourself? Or did you do that and find out you were wrong? Here is what a quick wiki found out (here is the reference you desired: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_rugby_union_matches_between_England_and_South_Africa, let me know if you need me to find another reference to back it up)
-So the last tour to South Africa was in 2007. The first match was on the 26th May at Vodacom Park and England lost 58-10.
The second was on the 2nd of June at Loftus Versfeld and England lost 55-22.
I'm afraid I've lost interest half way through doing this, but I'm sure your not the idiot that your making yourself out to be so you'll be able to do the rest of the research on your own.

I'd love to know how many banal articles have ever been written and how many thousands upon thousands of hours wasted on this same tired old theme. In these tired, unimaginative journos' minds it must be like when you're in a race in a dream: constantly getting closer but always seeming just as far away. There has almost always been lots of close games between 6N and 3N the vast majority of which go to the South, with a few whollopings in there, "the gap" is hugely constant with where it has tended to be every other year. If 6N champs losing to most inconsistent southern side 5 times in 9 months is "closing" woe betide a widening of the gap. Only consistent performance like that of England leading in to 2003 will seriously shake the world order.

@TVaddict - you've made the cardinal sin of supplying facts. I'm sure there's some reason that those facts fit into one of the following categories:
1 - they're skewed to prove your point.
2 - they're simply made up.
3 - they don't take into account injuries.
4 - they don't take into account referees.
5 - they aren't visible in the southern hemisphere.

Sure thing. A quick wiki is all that was needed....
On this tour South Africa scored an average of 4.6 points more than England every match.
On our last tour to South Africa (2007) they scored an average of 40.5 points more every match.
Even if we look at the last three matches in London, South Africa scored an average of 19 more each match.
Now I'm sure you can see the difference between the three numbers right? Or do I need to work that our for you too? Clearly shows some kind of reduction of the gap don't you think? So someone saying that the gap is closing would in fact be right... Silly SH people...

We'll never catch up unless the PRL clubs take responsibility for the players they supply to England and raise the standard of domestic rugby. and if they refuse then lets get regionalised. These idiots are talking of boycotting euro rugby! The aviva prem is lame drivel. The euro cup is the only opportunity English players get to play in a quality competition and we can see from the results that they struggle to even make that step up! If the clubs take that opportunity away from the England players then they will get slaughtered in the test match arena. So go on PRL, boycott European rugby because you'll just be bringing regionalism closer and the sooner the fat egomaniac millionaires get kicked out of english rugby the better for everyone!

really Stuart? to be fair I like Lancaster. anyone who kicks haskell out of the EPS despite the hype shows promise. He does make mistakes though and to his credit he rectifies them for the next match.
As far as the gap closing... no. we got taught a lesson about rugby union basics in SA. Wales choked and just could hack the pressure. Ireland are still all over the place at test level. that third test was a bit of a cringe-athon even if you weren't Irish.

Can someone from the southern hemisphere please explain the difference between the terms "the gap is closing" and "there is no gap".
Also, I'm struggling to understand the constant whining by the SH about timings of tours.
In June, the NH players have more time to prepare then the SH, but they've just finished a whole season, whereas the SH players are in mid-season form.
In November the SH players have more time to prepare than the NH, but they've just finished a whole season, whereas the NH players are in mid-season form.
Seems pretty identical to me.

To all the one sided Sh comentators its good to seee your not falling into our Nh sin of arrogance. Instead we can read lots of balanced and thoughtfull comments that help us up north truly comprehend the depth of our failings we must really learn from your humility and and fair minded ness............NOT!!!!!!!
The gaps closer than its ever been. In the past the Nh would never of cntemplated three test tours of the south because of the enevitable humiliation of the trouncings that would have resulted. The fact is like it or not all the test series were keenly fought and with the odd exception lost by small margins on the score boards. We are not as good as, nor are claiming to be as good as, the Sh just alot closer to being so. And its not just one side but several Nh teams that were close. the curve is still on the up and eventually we will get there. Maybe even by 2015.

lol wales was the closest against the weakest aus teamm in quite a while plus how many times have they played each other lately 6 times so they should be close, not sure about the saffas new set up and still got the job done against a team that plays the same style, abs well no need to comment ireland pissed tem off and got smacked for it. end of year will show after rugby championship teams will be more settled look out up there

this guys is just embarrassing himself. the gaps are ever far and increasing. full strength wales swept by wallabies missing 5 of the best players in the world. ireland destroyed to the tune of a combined almost 100 odd points with a somewhat second string side in the last match. england's best result a draw against a south african side that was picked to basically draw matches, if they ran into a boks side that was made up of the super 15s best it would have been so very messy. all this after no break or preparation time. what are they smoking up there?
