BT: Looking to expand

BT Sport is reportedly in advanced sponsorship negotiations with Welsh and Irish teams in a move to expand its rugby profile.

The Sunday Telegraph reports that the broadcaster - already a jersey sponsor of Edinburgh and Glasgow - is targeting all four Welsh regions as well as the four Irish provinces.

"Rugby is at the heart of BT Sport, and so we talk to people all the time," read a BT Sport statement.

"We have helped to raise the profile of the club game in England by showing three live matches at weekends, and we plan to build on the successful start we have made."

BT and rivals Sky are currently in a fierce battle for television broadcast rights in the British Isles and with Sky set to broadcast live PRO12 games for the first time from next season, BT will see placing their logo in front on Celtic audiences as major coup.

BT's interest in expanding their rugby portfolio also comes amidst uncertainty about the future of European rugby with growing speculation surrounding the possibility of a new Anglo-Welsh league being formed as result of the fallout between the Welsh regions and their national union.
