Back in business: NZ open their 2012 season against the Irish

New Zealand kick-start their reign as world champions when they host Ireland at the scene of the rugby nation's epic World Cup victory last year.
It's been seven long months since the men in black lifted the Webb Ellis trophy at Auckland's Eden Park, and Kiwi fans will accept nothing less than for their team to pick up where they left off - albeit in more convincing fashion - in the first of three Tests against the Irish.
There's always added pressure for any newly crowned world champions to perform, and the All Blacks will want to quash the theory that they're suffering from a RWC hangover by opening their 2012 account with a good win.
Under a new coaching setup headed by Steve Hansen, Sir Graham Henry's successor will also be in the hot seat to appease New Zealand's rugby-mad public that their beloved All Blacks are in safe hands.
Indeed, building a team to defend the Webb Ellis trophy in England in 2015 starts now and the 53-year-old Hansen has already made good by selecting a side blended with massive experience and young guns that have consistently stood up during the Super Rugby campaign.
Even though the rigours of a long Super Rugby season has taken its toll on a number of All Blacks with several star players already ruled out (Richard Kahui, Cory Jane, Jerome Kaino, Keven Mealamu etc), the depth of quality players in NZ has still allowed Hansen to pencil in a side to leave opposition quivering in their boots.
And certainly if history is anything to go by, All Blacks supporters have nothing to worry about. In 107 years of trying, Ireland have never managed to beat New Zealand, whilst the closest they've come to a win in the 24-Test rivalry was a 10-10 draw in Dublin in 1973.
But droughts are there to be broken - just ask the Scots - and Ireland will take plenty of heart from their Celtic cousins' first win on Australian soil since 1982. Don't be surprised if they're doing a similar rain dance to the one performed by Scotland in Newcastle... though come rain or shine, the Irish will have to be on top of their game when facing the world champs in their own back yard.
The last time Ireland played a Test against the All Blacks in the 'Land of the Long White Cloud', they were comprehensively beaten 66-28 in New Plymouth, where the visitors were outscored by their hosts nine tries to four. That was two years ago. The last time Ireland played at Eden Park, they beat the Wallabies in their RWC pool match and turned the tournament on its head. That was last year.
Fast forward a few months and Ireland return to New Zealand in 2012 with a forgettable Six Nations campaign under their belt, and missing some key players who are either retired (Denis Leamy and David Wallace) or injured (Paul O'Connell, Stephen Ferris and Tommy Bowe).
They will, however, be boosted with a squad built around Heineken Cup finalists Leinster and Ulster which make up the spine of the team. They've also been together on and off for virtually an entire year, whilst this All Blacks unit have had much less time together in the build-up to Saturday.
If anything, this will give under-fire coach Declan Kidney some hope as he looks to exploit some rust in the All Blacks machinery. With the noose getting tighter around his neck, Kidney is feeling the pinch to produce the goods ever since watching his side dumped out of the RWC by Wales in the quarter-finals.
Unlike his coaching counterpart, it's gone from bad to worse for the former Munster boss who has overseen Ireland slip to eighth spot in the IRB rankings due to a run of poor results and one feels a winless tour could spell the end of Kidney unless he has anything to do about it.
"We will see how we measure up. You have an excellent side there and we are under no illusions about the size of the task we're up against," he said.
"There's a belief that we can perform better than we have been."
Actions speak louder than words.
Players to watch:
For New Zealand: All eyes will be on how the uncapped trio of Julian Savea, Aaron Smith and Brodie Retallick get on in their first Test outing. Having barely put a foot wrong in Super Rugby, it was inevitable that the 21-year-old Savea would be handed a black jersey. The same can be said of young lock Retallick (also 21), who will add energy and enthusiasm behind a grizzled front row. Smith - noted for his slick passing - will be feeling the most pressure to produce the goods however, after it was felt Andy Ellis or TJ Perenara (both snubbed by the selectors) were better options at nine. But there's no better way of proving your doubters wrong with a solid performance, and the Highlanders halfback will be looking to do just that.
For Ireland: There will be a couple of new faces in Ireland's line-up too in the form of Munster wing Simon Zebo and Ulster prop Declan Fitzpatrick - the tighthead getting the nod after Mike Ross failed to recover from a hamstring strain. Of the new caps, Zebo is the most exciting and certainly has an eye for the try-line as seen in his breakthough season for Munster (12 tries in 23 games). If the 22-year old natural talent continues to threaten with ball in hand, then he should be a real handful for opposite number Zac Guildford.
Head to head: There's plenty of individual battles to whet the appetite, but perhaps the most evenly matched is in the second row. Dan Tuohy and Donnacha Ryan are two players coming off the back of superb seasons for their respective clubs. They're a completely untested combination but make tackles, hit rucks and secure line-out ball without fuss. New Zealand's Sam Whitelock and Retallick are bigger boys and aggressive ball-carriers, but the Irish pair can match them around the park.
Previous results:

2002: Ireland lost 15-6 in Dunedin

first test is always the visitors best shot at a win. Nigel Owens has been known to help out his celtic buddies at times too. NZ need to (and should) put ireland away early.

contrary to popular belief, Irish people do not like the rain....I don't think bad weather really benefits Ireland, it could just mean 80 minutes of up the jumper rugby by both sets of forwards...I am not too worried about the match ups round the pitch, because if Carter or Sexton keep hoofing the ball down the pitch in bad weather, then those match ups become rather meaningless...for Ireland, I think that Kearney will be incredibly busy - especially if the conditions are bad...
being incredibly delusional here, but Ireland to sneak it :)

Looks like it may be wet, which does not really suit Ireland as we'll probably see more knock ons from both sides, hence more scrums, which Ireland will want to avoid, even for their own put in. But though I would prefer Reddan at 9 there could be a hidden advantage for Ireland at scrum half; where rookie Aaron Smith with his long accurate passing, suited to dryer conditions, could be pressurized big time by Murray who is more a down and dirty "in your face" close quarters 9. By all accounts, Smith's replacement, Weepu, is off form and unfit...With Ireland's light mobile pack, their big hope would be to go out and play an unpredictable style of broken play "football" and have a real go by moving NZ around the pitch at serious pace. This can be done, if done without fear, and with intelligence and purpose...when you consider the pace and stamina of players like Tuohy and Ryan in the 2nd rows, Healy at prop and the entire back row, Ireland can play with fury and pace, with pacy outside backs who can finish...Very Munsteresque, yes, but maybe for once, Kidney's Munster blood and mindset might come home to roost, afterall it is Munster who are the only Irish side to have ever beaten the All Blacks and were only pipped at the 80 minute mark in recording a 2nd victory only a few years ago....so there is something there for Ireland to draw on, if they believe in and dictate their own game, hopefully!!
I certainly think Ireland are worth a small flutter at a generous 15/2 but it's a hopeful outside bet, and though I'll be playing the game in front of the TV tomorrow morning and rooting for Ireland, it is really difficult to see beyond a NZ win, mainly because Ireland are missing 4 very key players in Ross, O' Connell, Ferris and Tommy Bowe and New Zealand have a well rounded team with both young talent and experience

What I'm hoping for is that the match is at least a spectacle, with both teams and the fans contributing to the occassion.
(Nervously) looking forward to it.ireland have been consistently inconsistent since 2009, even with all the injuries I feel We will put in a competative performance, but New Zealand to score a few late tries.
For people who don't have sky sports does any body know a decent web-site that the match will be streamed on?.

Irish Scrum isn't going to stand a chance, without Ferris they're going to get a hard time around the breakdown and the backline (although somewhat fresher than before) is going to struggle to defend with Earls on SBW and that back 3 on the Irish wingers. I'm just hoping sexton continues to stand up so the lions are assured a good 10 next year.

Bokavenger - thats ridiculous if you believe that. This is professional sport, not some rigged and corrupt political system.
ABs will be too string for Ireland in every department I feel. I could be messy. Especially seeing as Ireland have under performed in recent times.

@bokavenger - I am not trying to create a stir here, but are you racist? Because that is seriously the impression I get from you. If the All Blacks win this weekend which I suspect they will, it will only be because they were the better team.

@BokVandoos.....take your jealousy elsewhere troll.....this thread is about NZ rugby, not your useless saffa mentality. Perhaps one day your boring one dimensional Boks will be considered the benchmark in world rugby....until then, suck it up loser.
I hope this is a tough test series for the mighty AB's....we need tough games before heading into the new Championship, not runaway victories. I reckon this will be a close series anyhow....C'mon the Men in Black!!!!

I am not at all confident that the All Blacks will win as many expect.
Just look at that backline -- when did the ABs last field such a raw unit? Only Carter and Conrad Smith have any experience. And with the forecast for rain, wind and a greasy ball, I worry about the flighty trio we have at the back. Yes, Savea is much improved but he is still an airhead -- as, to a degree, is Dagg.
I would feel a lot better if Cory Jane were there. Without him, it could be very messy.
Given the game we might expect, much will also depend on whether Vito and Retallick can fill the boots of Kaino and Thorn.

No way the Irish will keep it within 40 i think. Kidney has to go. Some shocking selection issues here. Earls against SBW? Massacre. How deccie thinks he could hold him is beyond me. Zebo is good in attack and has proved this but he was found annihilated so many times this season in defence. Too soon for his first cap. Dan Touhy deserves his game and for ages i've wanted Ryan in ahead of O'Callaghan. Granted Ferris is a big loose but its still a good back row but is O'Mahony not a Seven? We all know O'Briens a Six. The ABS will Dominate the Backs and the front Row, the breakdown is the only area can contest.

Usually we see a disjointed start to the June tests from the ABs, but this year feels different. It didn't look like it a month ago, but the team is made up of players just fizzing in super rugby. Could be the start of something epic...

As an Irish fan, I will watch the game with one eye open. We are going to be hammered several feet into the ground.... The fault for this defeat lies in Declan Kidney. A man who never took the step from provincial to international rugby. His selection and management has been overly conservative, relying on the old guard.
Ireland desperately need a coach with international experience - Mallett would be nice :-)

Even if Ireland were better than they are, they'd never be allowed to win against the IRB's precious marketing tool. Let the ABs do their little war dance so the IRB can use it in a marketing video, then head back to the hotel boys. Result is already pre-determined in the referees eyes.

ireland will be super stoked to get within 10. i dont think aaron smith has any doubters to prove wrong, im the first to say i would have loved to see perenara playing and ellis deserved his spot but no one can dispute that smith deserves it aswell. zebo being a handful for guildford? please, even the irish lads say he cant defend, im putting zac down for a hattrick. looking forward to a really good game i hope for the sake of entertainment and because its a perfect opportunity the allblacks put in a brilliant performance and play some pretty rugby. wish all the debut men well but especially retallick repping the mighty chiefs.
