Blues player Rhys Patchell l breaks a tackle to score the opening try

Injured: Rhys Patchell

Cardiff Blues will be missing Rhys Patchell for their crucial Heineken Cup game against Toulon in Nice as the fly-half is ruled out for 16 weeks.

The 20-year-old, who has been in impressive form for the Blues this season, requires surgery on his injured knee in a blow to Cardiff's hopes.

"It is a disappointment to us to lose Patch for this period of time when he is playing so well, with many crucial games coming up in both Europe and the RaboDirect PRO12," said Phil Davies.

"However, it will give others within our squad the opportunity to step up as we look to enjoy a strong start to 2014.

"We wish Rhys all the best with his rehabilitation, will give him the very best support and I know he will be determined to get back fit as soon as possible. We all look forward to seeing him back in a Cardiff Blues jersey in the coming months."

He added ahead of Saturday's game at the Allianz Riviera, speaking to Wales Online: "Gareth Davies will be there (at number 10) and we have got confidence in him."

"He has done a fantastic job for us this season. He came on here against Toulon and won us the game. We know we have got a big job ahead of us, but Gareth has got the ability to play, with his handling skills and playing flat to the line.

"It's about getting him to show what he can do and lead the team around the pitch."
