Halfpenny boots Wales to victory

Leigh Halfpenny Wales kicking for goal against Scotland Six Nations

Kicking king: Leigh Halfpenny

Wales downed Scotland with a 28-18 victory in a penalty-ridden goalkicker's dream at Murrayfield in the Six Nations.

A match dominated more by the whistle and boot than any real memorable moments of attacking flair, Scotland and Wales racked up a total of 28 penalties between them as both sides continued to displease referee Craig Joubert.

Leigh Halfpenny ended his afternoon with seven penalties to his name and missed three earlier in the first half, while Scotland scrum-half Greig Laidlaw also reaped the rewards from persistent indiscipline with six penalties of his own.

Neither side was able to generate any sustained tempo due to an imposing performance from the Welsh scrum and countless idiotic penalties from Scotland, in a replica of their discipline against Ireland two weeks ago.

A promising start from Wales at the scrum lead to a simple penalty opportunity for Halfpenny, handing the visitors a 3-0 lead after four minutes.

Greig Laidlaw responded with a long-range penalty that snuck over the crossbar minutes later, before Scotland took the lead when Wales were caught offside outside their own 22.

Scotland's penalty count continued to rise but Halfpenny wasted two penalty chances to let the hosts off the hook. The full-back's fourth attempt ricocheted off the post.

George North's break down the right-hand side gave Wales excellent field position, and they capitalised with a try from Richard Hibbard, regaining the lead with Halfpenny converting.

Rare field position for Scotland yielded a penalty at the scrum to the hosts, Laidlaw going for goal from the limit of his range and sending it through the posts.

Sale lock Richie Gray was stretchered from the field after a lengthy stoppage in play, causing concern for is club side Sale and also the selectors of the British and Irish Lions.

Laidlaw continued to maintain his accuracy going for goal, putting Scotland ahead just before half-time with another 40 metre effort to put the hosts into the lead.

Wales though were handed an attacking scrum in Scotland's 22 after a knock-on from Sean Lamont at the restart, winning a penalty after Jim Hamilton infringed for Halfpenny to restore the Welsh lead in Edinburgh - 12-13 to the visitors at the interval.

Laidlaw fell short of the posts with his fifth penalty attempt at the start of the second half, his first miss of the afternoon as he struggled kicking into the wind from 46 metres out.

Halfpenny had no such problem from a much shorter distance after a Welsh attack, stretching the gap to four points before Laidlaw responded in the latest chapter of the Murrayfield kicking exhibition.

Wales were presented with a chance to produce some attacking rugby from a five metre lineout, but inevitably the ball was lost forward. Another penalty to the visitors from the scrum saw Ross Ford cautioned, with Halfpenny converting.

The full-back struck again with yet another penalty to stretch the Welsh lead to 22-15 nearing the 60 minute mark. The kicking pendulum inevitably swung back Scotland's way as Laidlaw then added three more points of his own.

Halfpenny added his fifth and sixth penalties of the afternoon to open up an 18-25 gap for Wales going into the final 10 minutes as their scrum continued to ruthlessly dominate the Scottish pack. Another penalty chance, another three points for Halfpenny.

Scotland threw everything at Wales late on as they attempted to claw their way back into the match, but there was to be no breakthrough against a revitalised Welsh defence. The title decider between Wales and England next weekend is very much on.

Man of the Match: Hounded by his critics in recent weeks, Sam Warburton's work ethic was exceptional throughout with 13 tackles to his name.

Moment of the Match: After missing three consecutive kicks, Leigh Halfpenny nailed a difficult touchline conversion after Richard Hibbard's try and never looked back.

Villain of the Match: Frustrating for supporters, the high penalty count ruined the game as a spectacle. Eyes on you Mr Joubert.

Poor game, both sides too tense. Scotland lost because their discipline was shocking at times. Having said that, Joubert seems to have lost any empathy for the game, he's very fussy and whistle happy and the players do not have any idea what he wants. By the way I'm a qualified ref so have some idea what I'm talking about!

Chubbylugs you go on about johnathan davies being one sided but what about stuart barnes.

At least johnathan davies is funny and stuart barness tries to be. John davies is far from biased and has always told the truth about welsh rugby.

Anyway he cant be that one sided cause every other commentatoe in northern hemisphere is going with Wales' star leigh halfpenny except johnathan daie who votes for hogg.

Good scrums by wales and i cant wait to see next week how much we will dominate at scrum time. All this Cole or Adam for lions hype will be proven when our scrum dismantels the english scrum just like last year. And if you think im wrong then just think back at when the scottish scrum had the upper hand against england not so long ago and then look at what we did to them today.

The only sensible post I have read so far is KiwiRooster. Joubert is simply not up to it and lets face it England would have lost to France if he hadn't allowed a blatant offside leading to England's try. And chubbylugs - your monocle says it all - you're a fool and clearly no jack sh**t about rugby

Dour match.

The team with most savvy won the game.

Scotland were (and usually are) abyssmal.

Glad to see Warburton shining.

I still think Wales are underrated.

I hope Gray's injury is not serious.

Did I drink too much beer while watching the match or did Joubert make too many mistakes?

Rugby going down the drain...

Crap! Two teams with zero ambition giving a poor referee very little to work with. I have been an avid Welsh fan my entire life, but as long as we have Mike Phillips dictating the pace of play, and a set of selfish one dimensional backs outside him I am indifferent as to the outcome and will cheer for any attempt to play enterprising rugby regardless of team. Yes Joubert was poor, but he did not have a lot to work with. The players did a fine job of killing the game all by themselves

Chubbylugs - Disagree mate, Wales were effective they challenged the breakdown to the letter of the law. In fact i fought the ref was very lenient on the Scots lots of dark arts going on in the breakdown which in my opinion stopped a number of potential tries?

Probably one of the worst displays of refereeing I have seen for a long time. The objective of a referee is not to be noticed on the pitch Joubert looked like he wanted his name in lights and most definitely decided the game whether Wales or Scotland would have won without his interventions we will never know. He was extremely pedantic in giving penalties and free kicks and did his best to kill the game and he succeeded. He is refereeing as though nobody has told him about materiality a concept that referees have been told to apply for at least 5 years, absolutely shocking.

FISH - perfectly summed up. As a Scotland fan why are we scared of keeping the ball in hand? We had a few minutes at the end when the game was dead and buried and we actually tried to run with the ball. And looked a bit dangerous. We are not making progress full stop. Deserved by Wales so no sour grapes.

My mistake, I see Steve Walsh is officiating in the Ireland-France game.

But he is actually making my point, in far more difficult conditions, Walsh is way more effective a referee than Joubert, no questions asked. He is more pro-active, you can tell that when one side of scrum is being collapsed by one prop or the other, Walsh changed side to see who was going at fault. He is a very professional referee, I wish we would see more of him in the big games.

@fish

When a ref allows offsides, hands in the ruck, and early engagement accrue for 70 mins from one side, would you not expect a yellow card or two. Wales the attacking side, first ruck transgression and they get a yellow. Ref utterly clueless, not wales.

A well deserved victory for the Welsh but for the sake of me, I cannot understand why Craig Joubert is still officiating at international level.

Joubert had yet another shocker of a game, even when the line judges signaled several infringements from one side and the other, the South African seemed utterly lost and out of touch.

I am thinking about a referee like Steve Walsh who rarely put a foot wrong when making a decision and I am wondering if the IRB still makes him pay for his past antics. Walsh unlike Joubert never let players influence his decisions. Craig Joubert seems so uncertain about most decisions he takes (take the scrummages today - it was horrendous) that the most experienced players actually take advantage of his obvious shortage.

I thought Stuart Dickinson was the worst ever referee but in his case it was just plain arrogance that prevented that Aussie prick to admit when he was wrong. In Craig Joubert's case, it is not arrogance because he appears to be a descent person but he just strikes me as being short of knowledge to officiate at this level.

I would not trust the guy for a Currie Cup game, so international rugby? Please spare me the disappointment.

what a joke N.H rugby is, referee killed the game, but not as much as wales and scotland did, what a pathetic display of rugby all round

Dreadful game. Wales did deserve to win but they were not great at all. On that performance England will destroy them. Scotland were back to their dreadful self and considering they were at home, they showed no adventure. Still, the whole debacle was not helped by what was probably the worse refereeing performance in this tournament. Craig Joubert was utterly useless, inconsistent and helped to ruin an already poor game.

Well the match went as i thought it would.Halfpennys kicking form making the differance.Scotlands coaches must be absolutly livid atm.Just how many stupid needless penalties did Scotland give away. They also totally bolloxed the scrum,by consistently going early,I said G.Cross should have started ,and looks like i was proved right,as the scottish scrum ,was better when he came on with a measly 8 mins Jourbert wont be the toast of Scotland supporters ,but he got 99% of the calls right imo,He actually had a good game, wanted the match to flow, but with both sides giving away so many penalties ,he just didnt have an option.Scotland also looked scared to actually keep the ball in hand ,and again kicked to much, which played straight into Wales hands. So well done Wales another potential banana skin avioded, and Scotland ,well you have to start compeating at the breakdown ,and keeping the ball in hand,Otherwise what was a good season ,will become just a normal one.France next week ,will be a real tester for Scotland ,and if continue to play as they are ,will be thrashed i feel.

Was that a rugby match I just watched? Because, I don't think I saw any rugby being played... Mr. Joubert stole the show and killed the flow of the game. Skinny men blowing whistles shouldn't be the highlight in rugby.

Wales got away with murder at the breakdown and were always offside at the ruck. Will someone please stop Jonathan Davies commentating. He really spoils games with his grating voice and one eyes view of the game. We don't all support his one sides views
