Wales job for McBryde

12th December 2012 15:48

Wales forwards coach Robin McBryde

Taking over: Robin McBryde

Robin McBryde will assume the reins when Wales face Japan in 2013 due to the fact that Warren Gatland and Rob Howley are coaching with the Lions.

Howley was on Wednesday named alongside Andy Farrell and Graham Rowntree as Gatland's right-hand men for the upcoming tour to Australia.

That left a hole in the Welsh set-up for the two-Test series in the Far East, one McBryde will fill.

"I am delighted and extremely proud to have again been handed the honour of leading Wales on an important tour," said McBryde, who will be joined by Neil Jenkins, Shaun Edwards and newcomer Mark Jones on the tour.

"It is a privilege to coach my country and I will embark on this tour determined to get the best out of the squad against what I know will prove to be tough opposition.

WRU Group Chief Executive Roger Lewis was upbeat about the announcement.

"The coaching team we have announced for the Japan tour is evidence of how the development pathway in Wales is working effectively for Welsh rugby," he said.

"The group we have established represents an ideal mix of huge talent from the current Warren Gatland set up combined with some of our best young prospects for the future in a range of disciplines."

Why not Shaun Edwards?

At least he could hit a barn door with a ball whilst he was playing!
