We started poor, got worse - Farrell

Disappointed: Andy Farrell

England assistant coach Andy Farrell was highly critical of his side's first half performance in Hamilton, shipping 29 points in their 36-13 loss to New Zealand.

The tone, felt Farrell, a former dual-code international, was set by Freddie Burns' opening kick-off, which failed to go the requisite ten metres.

Stating that the two teams showed ""in black and white what intensity looks like and what intensity doesn't look like", the coach slammed his team's concession of four tries, two from Julian Savea.

"We started poor and it got worse," admitted Farrell. "The first half wasn't good enough.

"I thought we might have put pressure on in the second half but the first half the All Blacks demonstrated why they're the number one team in the world at the moment.

"For us to win at this level we need to be better.

"Savea's a phenomenal player...and probably a reflection of the quality of the skills the All Blacks showed, particularly during the first half."
