A great player indeed. And certainly among those whom, as a New Zealander, I most feared.

While he gave everything for his team, he always seemed to be a decent person. As a player he'll be missed.

Interesting to see the tributes flow from Saffers and Kiwis alike.

Speaks volumes about the character of Stirling Mortlock.

Amazes me Mortlock had been out of the Aus side for so long anyway, big mistake to have left him out

As a South African and someone who greatly admires Jacque Fourie (one of the best 13's ever), I must don my hat and say Mortlock may be the best no 13 ever. Loved his rampaging runs. Better than O'Driscoll. One of the few opposition players that I enjoyed even when he was shredding the Boks to pieces. Good on ya, mate. You will be missed

One of my favourite players of the last decade. Well done Stirling, John Eales' boots were big ones to fill and you did just that, even if they were always gonna be a bit roomy. Stirling Mortlock is also, in my opinion, the most 'rugby union' name I have ever heard. A good ambassador, a gentleman and hard b4stard in the tackle. Thanks and enjoy the fattening up.

A pain in the arse for all NZ supporters because he was just so damn good at what he did. As the article said his intercept in 2003 really set the tone for the aussies win.

Great player, will be missed

As a Bok supporter I have to say that he is/was an incredible player who would be one of the all time greats if it wasnt for his terrible injuries. Better than Horan and Little combined!

I'll be at Newlands for his last game - and I'm sure the Newlands faithful will show him their loud appreciation when he takes to the field. One of the best players of the 00's. What a legend.

True legend! Always one of the toughest guys around, never took one step back. Hope he goes on to mentor young players. Great example.
