Crockett wary of Sharks' maul

Crockett: Ready for the Sharks

Crusaders prop Wyatt Crockett has identified the Sharks' maul as a major threat ahead of Saturday's semi-final in Christchurch.

The Sharks were dominant in the forward play, in last weekend's play-off victory over the Highlanders in Durban, and their maul at the line-outs - as well as their scrummaging - ws superb throughout that clash.

The men from Durban laid down their marker as early as the 15th minute of that encounter when Marcell Coetzee scored the game's opening try from a rolling maul.

"You have to be disciplined when you do defend against it," Crockett told Fairfax Media.

"The mindset has to be to collectively stop it.

"Because once they get momentum it's bloody hard to stop."

The Crusaders have experienced players like Crockett, Richie McCaw, Kieran Read, Sam Whitelock, Matt Todd and Owen Franks in their pack, who are working on a way to counter the visitors' maul and they should be ready when the Sharks get the drive going at the line-outs.

"You also have to have a couple of men standing on each side in case they do a wee eight-nine play off the tail of the maul," explained Crockett.

"You need to have that shored-up.

"The rest of us just have to get nice and low and go hard to try to stop the thing. You can do it. But the big thing with stopping it is getting in there nice and early before they get any momentum."
