Israel Folau: Made a big impact in union

Waratahs full-back Israel Folau believes a hybrid game involving both rugby codes would be a success and wants to be part of the concept.

Folau played in his first rugby union season in 2013 and made such a big impact that he is developing into one of the most successful code hoppers in history.

After winning several honours in rugby league, the former Queensland and Kangaroos stalwart had an unproductive stint in Australian rules but he has won several awards since his switch to union.

There have been rumours about a proposed match between the Wallabies and the Great Britain rugby league team and there's plenty of speculation about a hybrid game in Australia.

"I think it would be a pretty good concept," Folau told AAP.

"It would certainly be good for the fans, and for them it would be interesting.

"I'm certainly up for it. I wouldn't mind being part of that.

"It would be a good test and a good challenge for the blokes from both games, to try and adapt to the two different games.

"But I think it would be a lot of fun and it will attract a lot of fans to come and watch the game."

The dual international's decision to join rugby union is one of several setbacks the 13-man code has suffered in recent season.

Folau and Blues utility back Benji Marshall are two former league stalwarts currently plying their trade in union.

Former All Black Sonny Bill Williams, who is playing for the Sydney Roosters in the NRL, returns to the 15-man code next year, and another big name in league, England and South Sydney Rabittohs forward Sam Burgess, will make a similar move in 2015.

Folau was diplomatic about the big-name losses which rugby league was suffering.

"For whatever reasons, those guys are looking at, or even thinking about coming across, they have certainly got different reasons," he said.

"And we see Sam Burgess deciding to come across as well. I think it's good for the game, so all the best to them in their transition."
