Jerry Collins: Caught carrying a kitchen knife

Former Hurricanes and All Blacks flanker Jerry Collins has been arrested in Japan on charges of illegally carrying a kitchen knife in a department store.

The 32-year-old, who played for New Zealand in 48 Tests from 2001 to 2008, including the 2003 and 2007 World Cups, was arrested on Saturday in the central industrial city of Hamamatsu, police said.

According to press reports, Collins caught a security guard's attention when he went behind a sales counter at the store.

When approached, the New Zealander pulled out the 17-centimetre (6.7 inch) blade from his pocket and placed it on the counter.

It is illegal to carry weapons with blades longer than 15 centimetres (six inches) without police permission in Japan.

Collins, who captained a Test match against Argentina in 2006 and scored two tries in the 2007 Rugby World Cup, told police that he "kept the kitchen knife for self-defence", according to the reports.

Collins played for Yamaha Jubilo in Japan's Top League from 2011 and left the team last month when his two-year contract expired.

First off - why is this newsworthy let alone on Planet Rugby in the first place?

Second - stellar proof-reading... "It is illegal to weapons with blades longer than 15 centimetres..."

And third - can we assume that had the blade been 2cm shorter, would he not have been arrested? This just seems odd...

Trouble with Brazilian pack gangs. They are a filthy, uneducated trouble-causing rabble in parts of Japan. I imagine he sorted several out one evening not realizing he now has to deal with so many of them.

Odds for getting mugged in Japan are close to zero. And I do know what I'm talking about - I have relatives there and visit often!.. He just could not find a better excuse at the time, I guess...

secondly, rather than an article on a player who last wore Black in October 2007, why not a column about Maori All Blacks 3 match tour of USA in November, and match (not test) v the Eagles???

More relevant to a rugby forum.

self-defence? Jerry! who is picking on you?

Couldn't he have said he was on the way to a cooking class?

Hardly the crime of the century.
