Ireland fly-half Jonathan Sexton has been ruled out of Saturday's fixture with Italy in Rome due to a torn ligament in his foot.
Sexton, who had recovered from the hamstring injury that had kept him out and was named in the starting XV earlier on Thursday, went over on his foot in training.
A scan has confirmed that he has torn a tendon in his left foot and is therefore ruled out this weekend.
There is no word so far as to how long Sexton will be ruled out.

This isn't good news for either Ireland nor the Lions. He will now be struggling to get a lot of rugby in this season depending on how severe the injury is but torn tendons aren't normally a quick heal. He will then have to get back to match fitness. I would be looking to take Jonny Wilkinson on this Lions tour if only (which it will be) as a back up to Sexton. After Sexton there is Farrell but after that there isn't anybody who you would say "yep, he's the man". Wilkinson is playing very well and has got pots of experience. He's a seasoned pro and has been there, done it and worn the t-shirt. None of the other come close IMO.
Anyway, let's hope that Jonny recovers to full fitness soon. He is needed!!
