Carter not on NZ awards shortlist

Overlooked: Dan Carter

All Blacks pivot Dan Carter has failed to make the shortlist for New Zealand's top rugby award, despite being named IRB Player of the Year last week.

Instead, the three in the running for the accolade are All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw, number eight Kieran Read and centre Conrad Smith. Bookmakers, including Paddy Power, have installed the former as their favourite to lift the title.

The winner will be announced in Auckland on Friday, meaning there is still plenty of time for rugby betting fans to back their favourite.

The award was won by Jerome Kaino in 2011 and Read the year before.

The Tom French Memorial Maori Player of the Year nominations are All Blacks full-back Israel Dagg, loose forward Liam Messam and scrum-half Aaron Smith. This award was won by All Blacks number nine Piri Weepu in 2011.

New Zealand Rugby Awards nominations:

Kel Tremain Memorial Player of the Year: Richie McCaw, Kieran Read, Conrad Smith

Tom French Memorial Maori Player of the Year: Israel Dagg, Liam Messam, Aaron Smith

NZRU Women's Player of the Year: Rawinia Everitt, Fiao'o Fa'amausili, Selica Winiata

Super Rugby Player of the Year: Craig Clarke, Aaron Cruden, Conrad Smith

Richard Crawshaw Memorial Sevens Player of the Year: Tomasi Cama, Tim Mikkelson, Lote Raikabula

NZRU Age Grade Player of the Year: Jason Emery, Jordan Taufua, Ofa Tu'ungafasi

ITM Cup Player of the Year: Robbie Fruean, Tim Nanai-Williams, Charles Piutau

Heartland Championship Player of the Year: Ben Coman, Tau Moeke, Peter Rowe;

Coach of the Year: Steve Hansen, Dave Rennie, Gordon Tietjens

Team of the Year: All Blacks, Canterbury, Chiefs

Is it just pure coincidence that the three NZRU POTY nominees and the IRB POTY pictured together? Well not on this page but on the PR homepage..great pic PR..anyway I'm hoping Smith gets it (especially inspiring his young Canes side this year)..

@ rolf: Exactly. If the award was for best 10 ever, I would grab it, run to Dan Carter, celotape it to his body and start singing For He's a Jolly Good Fellow... But that is not what these awards are for - it is for best 10 of 2012 (and for the PR award, most VALUABLE to his team's success) - and at 10 that was not Dan Carter...

Aaron Cruden was not only very valuable to the All Blacks when Carter was injured, but he was the best 10 in Super Rugby from February to August (even when Carter was playing) - and along with Taumololo and SBW one of the three key players who won the Chiefs the tournament. Michalak created a Sharks revival when he became 10 and almost single-handedly got them to the Super Rugby final, before almost single-handedly winning game after game for France at the end of the year... His game against Australia was probably the best performance by a 10 this year.

So it really annoys me that these guys are not being rewarded/acknowledged as the best 10's of 2012, just because Dan Carter featured and people are not paying attention... "Dan Carter played? Oh he must have been the best then..."

My wife thinks Dan Carter should be woman's player of the year but I think she's missing the point. (And only because I'm not playing any more.)

rolf says...

yes JaySTarr,

i tend to agree from my distant view.

BUT Dan Carter is so good - and has proven that over years - that he deserves any award there is.

Arguably he is the best ever - at least 10.

Granted: he was not the best player of 2012 when it comes to impact.

Hopefully read will get the credit he deserves this time round, best back row player in world right now and has been whole year.

once again that proves how the IRB will do anything for Dan or Richie to win something.

Isograford says...

@froggy73 Because the other three have been more consistent this year. Carter, when he hasn't been injured, has really only put a couple top drawer performances on the park.

McCaw should have won IRB player of the year not Carter.

hybrid187 says...

Disagree Kiwikev... surely its gotta go to McCaw ? Read not far behind at all tho. Carter had a great year but as has been said before, not as good as McCaw or even Etzebeth in my humble opinion (in terms of IRB POTY).

McCaw v SA in SA this 4N was immense. Absolutely incredible.

At least NZRU have the right three lads...

Read should win!

irb player of the year, a joke ?

ahahah so funny

richie mccaw 2009 deserved too ............

Posted 13:34 10th December 2012

JayStarr says...

Why? Because they know that he was not the best fly-half in his cameo in Super Rugby this year and only really made a show for the All Blacks in a few games at the end of the year. The NZ award is obviously run by people who are paying attention, unlike the folks at the IRB... It's a joke that they awarded Player of the Year to Carter - just as much as it's a joke that all the regurgitating imbiciles are picking Carter as their best 10 of the year in the PR Team of the Year article. Cruden and Michalak were significantly better and more valuable to their teams this year than Carter was.

@Froggy

As far as I'm aware, IRB award is only for internationals, while the NZ awards are for the whole year... including Super 15 and ITM Cup etc.

Carter wasn't even supposed to be on the IRB shortlist! READ deserved it more.Atleast NZRU agrees.

How come someone can be the IRB player of the year (ie the best player of the world this year) and not be the NZ player of the year ?? I'd like to know how mathematically, theorically, physically, scientifically this can be possible.

Or maybe NZ is a country not on this earth ??

Anyway, that shows these nominations (IRB, NZRU etc...) are a farce.
