Thomson ban extended

Adam Thomson: Gets another week

New Zealand flanker Adam Thomson's suspension has been extended by a week following an appeal by the IRB.

Thomson was banned for one week for stamping on Scotland's Alasdair Strokosch during the All Blacks' 51-22 win at Murrayfield on 11 November.

But the IRB appealed on the grounds that the independent judicial officer's decision had been unduly lenient.

The appeal committee found that the application of the low end entry point - two weeks - by the judicial officer had not been wrong, and on that point the appeal was not upheld.

But the appeal committee went on to say that the judicial officer's reduction of the entry point from two weeks to one week had not been consistent with IRB Regulation 17, and on that point the appeal was upheld.

The appeal committee therefore considered that the appropriate sanction in this case was two weeks.

Thomson's suspension was extended to apply from 11 November to 25 November, meaning he will be free to play against England at Twickenham on 1 December.

He was not selected in the team to face Wales in Cardiff on Saturday.

now that one's sorted, this week can focus on Andrew Hore, I'll get in early and pick eight weeks for his swinging arm tackle, stupid stuff and would surely have been a red if refs had seen it.

What a waste of everyones time, hardly any contact, hardly any problem, hardly any ban, hardly worth the effort.

As my fellow Kiwilad said its not enough .4 weeks and a farewell card would have been about right .

Typical IRB no sense of consistency in the judiciary, it should have been 4 weeks from the start down to 2 for his spotless disciplinary record and everyone would have been fine and dandy.

On the other hand though Gosper has shown nothing more then he is weak and spineless and 2 particular northern rugby scribes famed for their poisoned pens have bullied him what a joke.

Damn I would pay to see that!!! Most exciting thing in south african rugby this month/Year!!

actually ritchie has been on the receiving end on numerous occasions and the consequent punishments/ non-punishments make a mockery of what the irb have done here.

you can look at this 2 ways.... " any player from another team wouldve got more bc the ABs are a protected species"..but what about greyling ,higgenbottom, cooper, rougerie, hartley... all of whom committed far worse malicious offences.

the way i see it is if it were another player from any other team apart from the ABs, then this wouldnt have happened! ..so i guess all the jealous AB haters are correct in saying the ABs do receive special treatment!

Kiwilad is one of the most competent member in this brotherhood and never biased.

Even though Thomson is a nice guy, one week or two would not have been inappropriate.

Same applied to Greyling. I am not a fan of McCaw, but what he did was just cowardice. 2 weeks? Laughable

since Gosper has made such a fool of himself over this, right from that first ranting Twitter, will he appeal the appeal, and keep trying till he gets his way?

Still question the timing - a week at least since Gosper mouthed there would be an appeal, and it is heard a day before an international Thomson could have been named to play in. Maybe they can also review their review process?

Before there are lots of comments on how a week was enough, and how he hardly touched him or the English media are out to get the all blacks etc etc, just think if it was king Richie on the receiving end!

Am wondering why NZ are persisting with AT, given he is around 30 and not likely to be at the next RWC.

Looking at the 3rd row options Read, Messam Vito are below 30 with only RM over. IMHO it would be better to give a very young guy like Cane (and Todd) more opportunities in the MIB setup.

There are also some young guys like Hoeata, Manu, youngest Whitelock, et al, waiting for a chance.

So Gosper's appeal which was based on his opinion that the entry point was wrong failed.

Hardly an impressive start in his new position as CEO of the IRB.

He needs to engage his mind before his mouth next time.

Exactly as I said 4 weeks minus one (yellow card) and one for always having been a nice bloke.

As for you clowns calling for his execution, you can put your knitting away now.

@kiwilad For who? People who want to see him get longer just because he's an All Black and trolls like 'journalist' and serial All Black basher Stephen Jones beat their chest and fire up his brainwashed readers over it?

It was hardly more than a split second tap, even the Scottish player said so. If Thomson should be banned for anything, it should be for being stupid, reckless and not being much of a player these days.

Honestly, the game really is turning into Tiddly-Winks like Tana said.

Now if it had been Bakkies it would have been 7 weeks right from the start! But then again he does have "previous"

Good we can all now move on with our lives....
