Toulon win in Cardiff

Toulon seized control of Heineken Cup Pool Six with a hard-fought 22-14 victory over the Blues at Cardiff Arms Park on Sunday.

All of Toulon's point came from Englishmen as man-of-the-match Steffon Armitage's try and 17 points from the boot of Jonny Wilkinson proved enough to make it two wins from two for the French club.

After losing a thriller at Sale last weekend, having led throughout, Cardiff had the chance to get their European adventure off the mark, and it was Leigh Halfpenny who got the Arms Park crowd on the edge of their seats with a second minute try.

Finishing a move that had gone along the Blues' back line, the full-back accepted the final pass inside from his winger, Tom James, to dot down and give the French side an early surprise.

But Toulon made good use of their forward power, taking the ball into contact at every opportunity, and with the threat of Matheiu Bastareaud, looked likely to prove difficult visitors for Cardiff.

Two Wilkinson penalties earned his side a slim lead, but Cardiff were eager to cause Toulon difficulties, with Alex Cuthbert in particular looking to continue last week's hat-trick heroics.

Cardiff's Gavin Evans suffered a nasty collision in a tackle with Delon Armitage, but the Englishman was unfairly considered by the partisan crowd to be the villain of the piece. The Cardiff centre had slipped going into contact, and took a head knock, before being stretchered off for treatment.

Both sides then missed penalty attempts, but Halfpenny's kick at goal in the final minute of the half was successful, giving his side an 8-6 half-time lead.

No sooner had the second half started, than Wilkinson regained the lead for Toulon with another pin-point kick at goal, but Halfpenny was finding it difficult, slipping while taking his fourth kick.

He did though, reduce the arrears to a single point with a penalty on the hour mark, but Toulon picked up the pace, and Steffon Armitage scored his first Heineken Cup try of the season. Carl Hayman had made a huge burst deep into Cardiff territory from a Bastareaud offload. Matt Giteau drove further up to the five metre line, and scrum-half Frederic Michalak spun the ball out to Armitage, who powered his way to touch the ball down just over the line.

A Wilkinson conversion stretched the lead to eight points, and chasing the game, Cardiff thought they could have earned a losing bonus point, if not a win, as Halfpenny scored his third successful kick of the day, with only minutes left on the clock.

But Wilkinson kicked another penalty to deny the Blues the losing bonus point, as his side took top spot in the table.

Well I expected Toulon to win by a lot more than that, but a win away and no bonus point for Cardiff is good enough I guess. It went how I predicted, Cardiff very competitive till about 60 or so minutes then Toulon having that bit more to finish the game off. Though I thought Toulon played very badly in the first half with no pace in attack and surprisingly, given who's on their team sheet, very little power in their plays. A team like Toulon could just pound away South African style for the first 50 mins to soften teams up then bring bring on fresh legs to run round the now tired bodies to rack up the tries. I suppose the worrying thing is that they didn't play very well yet still won fairly convincingly against a good team. What happens when they start playing well?!

I'd also just like to say the crowd were very disappointing in booing of Armitage. I don't know if they were just too one eyed to see the incident, or too stupid to understand what happened, but it wasn't in the spirit of the game. The guy slipped into the tackle and hurt himself. It was an accident. Time to move on.

2nd weekend Johnnie has had a good kicking opponent copying his style. Must be good for the ego to have the most copied kicking technique... And still show them who is boss. Ghatland must be really thinking seriously about him now. Who would have thought a year ago it would be the England fly halves most probably topping Gatlands thinking. It changes all the time but Sexton to me is still not quite up there and besides he behaves like a football player. Flood and Wilkinson are looking good and I will keep arguing for Freddie Burns.

A good run out for Toulon, great ball retention. I don't like Delon Armitage and hope we've seen the last of him in the England set-up. However, that was never a high tackle, Evans' head was about 2 foot from the ground when Armitage touched him. How low can you go ?........

Well looks like Powell earned his money this week,Cardiffs defence was better ,but then it needed to be.Touloni feel played well with in themselves and didnt get out of 2nd gear ,except for the odd flash late in the 2nd half.S.Armitage was again outstanding ,and out played Warburton by a mile ,who again didnt finish a match. He cant catch a break atm and he will be lucky to be in the welsh squad imo this aurtum.Posatives for Wales is Halfpenny looks on fire ,but Roberts and Cuthbert look a tad off form i,but maybe in the national set up wil improve.
