Brodie Retallick: Executed a tip tackle

New Zealand lock Brodie Retallick has been issued with an off-field yellow card for dangerous play in Saturday's Test against South Africa.

The off-field yellow card is for contravening law 10.4 (j) lifting a player from the ground and either dropping or driving that player's head and/or upper body into the ground.

Retallick lifted Springboks lock Andries Bekker in a tackle that resulted in the Bok second row hitting the ground with his upper body while his legs were still in the air in the 20th minute of the match.

An off-field yellow card may be issued by the SANZAR citing commissioner for foul play incidents that are very close to, but in his opinion do not meet the red card threshold for citings.

In this case the incident was not acted on by the referee for the match, Alain Rolland, and on further review of the match footage the citing commissioner deemed an off-field yellow card was appropriate.

Surely the top NH hemisphere referee doesn't get things wrong does he well only if you talk to Welsh supporters. Lol. Geez there is some bleating here and of course those usual saffa whingers, with bok somewhere in their name, are there claiming they were hard done by. As we know with these trolls you never beat south Africa because SA either have a bad game, the ref helps the opposition and of course the opposition cheats against the lily white Boks (not being racist here) who never ever put a foot wrong or foul or cheat. If there is something to answer its because of the IRB conspiracy against South Africa. Geez give me strength. Maybe just maybe the ref missed it because he considered it not to be an offence. and not for any other sinister reason. Ok he has been found by the judiciary to be wrong and so made a mistake. Really IRB! Mr Rolland does not make mistakes and two weeks in a row you have shown him up unnecessarily. Its time the IRB stopped this conspiracy Clancy when he listened to his partisan South African TMO who it was claimed overstepped the mark. It was Clancy who got the blame. Remember the loud mouthed head of South African Refereeing Andre Watson who justified his countryman's partisan comments to referee Clancy. The IRB must stop persecuting Irish referees and finding faults with their refereeing. Surely this was supposed to stop when Paddy O'Brien (Im not Irish) was moved sideways out of the top referees position. Really the IRB have much to answer for.

My 2 cents, positive players (attitude and play) will always get favourable results. Yellow was justified because it sets a precedent, next time citing commissioner will recommend harsher sanctions.

ABs were cynical at the breakdown in the first half, Daggs yellow was a little unlucky, it wasn't cynical but rather a misread. Richie however really does push the limit, he could get yellow carded and I don't think anyone would complain.

Penalty count in the first half was also out of skew, ABs were penalised any time the challenged a ruck

Houston_11 - your first points is just what does happen - an example from this season is South African player Rynhardt Elstadt in a Super rugby match who received his third yellow card (an off-field one). Whether on or off field they are counted against the players disciplinary record, receive three and it's a judicial hearing (according to Rule 6.1 of the SANZAR Judicial Rules)

Elstadt received a suspension: See PR story http://www.planetrugby.com/story/0,25883,15999_7809866,00.html

So could any of the conspiracy theorists namely the 2 boks and a phile here explain how the match officials missed the forward pass in the S African try. Even Habana looked surprised.

Surely the ref wouldn't have wanted the Saffas to gain confidence and the advantage by scoring first.

Keep up the whining boys it just makes the victory even more sweeter.

I couldn't believe some of those first half decisions, from memory the All Blacks were penalised 9 times in the first half alone and didn't themselves win a penalty until the 68th minute by which time they had scored 4 tries. Retallick made a poor tackle but it wasn't intentional or dangerous (difference between Bakkies and most other players) and it wouldn't have changed the result... and neither will making excuses, it just makes you come across as sad and pathetic.

Pointless to give a yellow card off-field. There are only two reasons I could think of doing this is

1. To add them up (similar to football) and if you're a repeat offender you get a ban.

2. Interestingly, let's say Retallick already had a yellow in this game already and on review this was deemed a yellow. I'd guess that'd mean he'd be upgraded to a red card and again, miss a match.

Assuming that the IRB aren't following either of the above.... what a waste of money.

Leebok and Gazzabok are you the same person? If not, you must have very narrow heads. Get the blinkers off boys the ref penaliseds the ABs to death in the first half and the ABs got no thing even though I saw 2 occassions where the Springboks should have been penalised for holding on to the ball on the ground.

Trinats2 the citing commissioner.

NOT the same as Digby Ioane's one - his was determined by the Citing Commissioner to be a Red Card offence

This one, as the article states clearly did "not meet the red card threshold for citings"

Also re DI - his 5 weeks reflected his earlier appearance before judiciary for another red card level spear tackle - repeat red card offences.

Different.

Yes-- a tip tackle clearly seen by everyone out in the open--why no action at the time by officials? The answer must be that Alain Rolland and the touchies didn't miss it--if they had called it it would have been at least a yellow and they weren't game to have the ABs a man down at that stage--so Rolland gave SA a penalty for offsides or something almost immediately afterwards. Rubbish theory about 2 man tackles---Retallick clearly lifted Bekker which is not easy to do regardless of how many other people have hold of him.-but he then dropped him 9S--(Sandal the illegality is dropping the player once lifted not the lifting) .Another later incident was McCaw lying on the ground near his tryline and pushing the ball back out of Strauss's hands with Rolland calling a knock by Strauss-- the alternative was a yellow card for McCaw after he already had a few warnings and Rolland was subconsciously not up for that-----it's just not going to happen, so the SA supporters and commentators must accept the IRB way--if you are an excellent player especially an excellent Kiwi you will get subconscious latitude when the crunch comes. Look back at Umaga/Mealamu, Thorn, etc -- ask how often the ABs have come out of a game having been hard done by the ref--The quarters in 2007 was the only time in memory--one dubious pass only mind you, and the baaing is still going on--cf G Henry memoirs. The ABs are so good and so well coached and so fit and have so few injuries--they don't need assistance from the ref. Rolland was ok to penalise their repeated infringements in the early part of the game---why do the refs have the subconscious reluctance to give them cards? Is it fear of the outraged Henry-type baaing afterwards??

All Black player - therefore allowed to get away with things like this. And playing the ball on the ground. And being offside. And not releasing the tackled player. I think we should all invent a silly dance that the IRB can use as a marketing tool. At least then we will all have to play to the same rules.

My question is how the ref missed this as it happened right in front of im involving 2 players over 6'5". Maybe it was because Boks were on top and were in a try scoring position when this happened and losing a man to a yellow card would have weakened he kiwis. Imagine if Bakkies had made that tackle??????? I can tell you what would have happened. no hesitation of a yellow. And why did they kiwis get 2 warnings for persistence offending? a JOKE... IRB should sort the refereeing out and be consistent. You can had bad referee's, as long as they are consistent.

sandal says...

So what does this mean? Surely not that he goes off for 10 minutes in his next game! Lol.

Some form of censure was appropriate, however.

Something the IRB hasn't addressed yet is that a lot of these tipping tackles occur when two people tackle a ball carrier and one of them, the one going higher, falls off the tackle. That is what happened in this case. It explains why a lot of tipping tackles occur, without there being any malicious intent on the part of the tackler.

What can the IRB do about it? Ban the two-man tackle? Do that and you lose an important part of the game, a great defensive weapon and not least a lot of mauls. Or should the IRB simply downgrade the offence when it arises from a two-man tackle.
