In 2007 the Pumas arrived to the World Cup having

a) an annual budget which was 25% of the super powers (NZ, SA, AUS, Eng, etc)

b) Very few international games/year (no 6 or 3 nations)

yet, they got 3rd. Then, runners up in the 7s World Cup in 2009.

Certainly they are not the favorites today but they will grow fast and I predict them being in the semifinals of the next World Cup (i.e., after 3 Rugby Championships)

the Pumas did beat the Boks in SA....1982, dressed up as South America XV (all 15 players and coach were Argies). 21-12, all 21 points were scored by legend Hugo Porta.

The first 20 mins should be very tight. If Arg get the bounce of the ball they may well get a lead they can hold on to. But I expect the Boks to smash the Argie pack despite Argentinas strengths there. Arg will welcome the Bok kicking game and Boks would do better to carry and starve Arg of possession and get some early drop goals then open the game up a bit after 30 mins.

The Pumas can only get better in the new 4N. Expectations are low so there's no pressure on them - just like against France.

S.Phelan is right ,the history books will have no bearing on the game what so ever. Its a new Puimas team and a new Bokke team. Both play a simlar game ,so its going to be a epic clash i hope. The Bokke go in a favourites ,but as Argentina have shown many times before ,that means nothing to them .Still feel the Bokke will nick it though but it will be closer than most expect

markpat, the training camp is Athetes Performance, in Pensacola, a high-performance center used by many athletes in various disciplines. This is the place where the Pumas did their conditioning before the RWC 2007 and 2011, and the coaches seem to like their methodology and facilities.

Actually, although the Pumas have never officially beaten the Springboks, they effectively toured under a different name in 1982, 'the South American Jaguars' ....and won. All 15 members of the team were Pumas that day.

There is an interesting article on it on Dumptackle Rugby Blog.

Looking forward to the game this weekend. Springboks will clearly be favourites, but the emotion of the game may bring the teams closer. I hope so anyway. No one wants to see a mauling.

What is so special about having a training camp in Florida? Does Florida have some sort of secret reputation for improving rugby teams?

Wouldn't they have done better to have a 2 week training camp in, say, South Africa? (or New Zealand)
