Driving hard: Stephen Ferris

Ulster cruised to a 31-10 bonus-point win over Aironi in the Heineken Cup at Ravenhill on Friday.

Ulster dominated from start to finish. The match took a little while to get going on a cold night in Northern Ireland but the home side eventually converted possession into points when Stephen Ferris went over in the 17th minute to give them a 7-0 lead after the conversion.

Although Tito Tebaldi reduced the deficit for the Italians with three points just a few minutes later, he also missed two other eminently kickable penalties and was made to pay for his profligacy.

As the first half wore on, the pressure became too much for Aironi and after full-back Giulio Toniolatti was sinbinned, Australian Adam D'Arcy crossed right on the stroke of half-time to give the Irishmen a 12-3 lead.

Into the second half and before Aironi were returned to their full complement of fifteen men, they found themselves three tries behind as 27-year-old Ireland international winger Andrew Trimble scored in the corner.

With the hopes and spirits of the Italians fading fast, Ulster secured a precious try bonus point in the 57th minute through replacement scrum-half Paul Marshall, who was too sharp for the defence from a quick tap penalty.

As substitutions were made left, right and centre, another replacement Patrick Jackson scored a fifth try for the hosts before their visitors from Northern Italy registered a consolation try of their own through Tommaso D'Apice at the death.

The result leaves Aironi pointless and rooted to the bottom of Pool Four but Ulster's second win in this season's Heineken Cup puts them in a competitive position going into their final three pool matches.
