Two tries: Scott Waldrom

The Chiefs outscored the Lions five tries to three to win 34-30 in another high-paced Super Rugby encounter in Johannesburg on Saturday.

It wasn't quite the carnage of last year but once again the Lions' porous defence ensured that plenty of points would be scored.

The result lifts the Chiefs to ninth in the overall standings while the Lions remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

Scott Waldrom scored two tries and was a major force at the breakdown as the visitors inflicted a nine defeat on the Lions, who have yet to win at home this season.

The Lions held an early 6-0 lead but Waldrom's first try in the 22nd minute, rounding off a move started in the Chiefs half, narrowed the gap to a single point.

Waldrom's second try gave the visitors the lead but the Lions responded with a try by full-back Michael Killian after Stephen Donald missed touch with a clearance kick and wing Lionel Mapoe counter-attacked with a 40 metre diagonal run.

The Chiefs only visited the opposition half four times in the opend 40 minutes but third try from lock Romano Graham gave them a 19-13 half-time lead.

The pattern continued in the second half when prop Toby Smith scored a bonus point try after another patient build-up by the Chiefs.

A try by centre Dwayne Sweeney, after a break by wing Lelia Masaga, put the Chiefs 31-16 ahead but the Lions produced a strong finish with converted tries by flanks Josh Strauss and Cobus Grobbelaar.

At 31-30 with less than ten minutes left the Lions were back in the game but a late Donald penalty sealed the result for the Chiefs.
