But they had to wait until 73rd minute to be sure of the points when Romain Edmond Samuel crossed to leave Bayonne having to travel home with nothing at Stade Armandie.
ASM Clermont Auvergne 34-9 CS Bourgoin-Jallieu
Parc des Sports Marcel Michelin, Clermont Ferrand
Lying in sixth position before Sunday's kick-off, Clermont knew that a maximum was a must.
And that was what they got thanks to well-taken scores from loosehead prop Thomas Domingo, number eight Sione Lauaki, centre Gavin Williams and winger Julien Malzieu.
USA Perpignan 23-16 CA Brive Corrèze
Stade Aimé Giral, Perpignan
Perpignan won the battle between ninth and tenth as scores from Damien Chouly and Julien Candelon - and the kicking of Nicolas Laharrague and Jerome Porical - kept the Catalans within touching distance of the top four. Brive at least left with a losing bonus.
RC Toulon 38-26 Biarritz Olympique
Stade Felix Mayol, Toulon
There was a bonus-point win for Jonny Wilkinson and company against BO as Rudi Wulf's brace, along with a try apiece from Jeremy Sinzelle and Gabirieli Lovobalavu saw them win.
Biarritz's two tries came via England's Iain Balshaw and America's Takudzwa Ngwenya.
Toulon were trailing 14-16 at the break after Balshaw touched down for Biarritz after five minutes, but the hosts came back with four tries including two from New Zealand winger Wulf (36, 65), Sinzelle (46) and Lovobalavu (75). Wilkinson kicked 18 points.
Stade Rochelais Atlantique 26-26 Stade Français
Stade Marcel Deflandre, La Rochelle

Racing-Métro 28-16 Montpellier HR
Stade Yves Du Manoir - Colombes (Paris)
Tries from Fijian winger Albert VuliVuli (38), Mirco Bergamasco (41) and Sireli Bobo (48) and 13 points off the boot of Jonathan Wisniewski allowed Racing avenge their 19-36 defeat at Montpellier and make up for their 6-6 draw against Brive on Wednesday.
The Parisians moved level on points with their second-placed opponents. Racing host Toulon next week!
Stade Toulousain 23-16 Castres Olympique
Stadium de Toulouse
In the day's final fixture, the reigning Heineken Cup champions were made to work hard for their four points as last season's surprise package once again showed that they are no mugs. Castres were in fact leading 16-13 in the final quarter but a try from the influential Thierry Dusautoir saw the Top 14 leaders prevail, extending their league lead to six points.
