Rewarded: Morné Steyn
South Africa have named a second-string side for Saturday's third Test against the British & Irish Lions in Johannesburg.
With the 2009 series having been wrapped up at Loftus Versfeld last weekend, coach Peter de Villiers has opted to give his fringe players an opportunity ahead of the upcoming Tri-Nations.
In comes debutant Zane Kirchner (full-back), Odwa Ndungane (wing), Jaque Fourie (centre), Wynand Olivier (centre), Jongi Nokwe (wing) and Morné Steyn (fly-half) to the back-line behind Ryan Kankowski (number eight), Johann Muller (lock) and Chiliboy Ralepelle (hooker).
Olivier, the form South African centre in the recent Super 14, gets to play his first game at inside centre since the World Cup year, with Jean de Villiers taking a break this week.
The combinations from scrum-half to outside centre, are where this team looks stronger than the one that won in Durban and Pretoria.
Steyn was the most consistent local fly-half in the Super 14 and he is being reunited with his Super 14 halfback partner Fourie du Preez, and Olivier, who slots in on the outside of Steyn, is also a Bulls player.
"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to play against the Lions and we respect them so much, we wanted to give all our players a chance to take them on," said Bok coach De Villiers.
"We believe they are as good as the other guys and they can go out and do an outstanding job for the Springboks.
"They will also bring fresh energy to the team after two tough Tests and hopefully give us the quick ball the backs will need. We have, after all, proved we are capable of scoring tries from first phase."
Uncapped Sharks lock Steven Sykes has been included on the bench for the test.
This follows the unsuccessful appeal on Thursday morning by Springbok lock Bakkies Botha to have two-week suspension for dangerous play set aside.
Reflecting on the loss of Botha and some of the other players selected in his forward-line, De Villiers backed the likes of Sykes who made an impression with the Emerging Boks in Cape Town.
"I'm still trying get over the disappointment of Bakkies but Steven Sykes is the man to replace him," he said.
"Chiliboy is an outstanding rugby player. If he didn't have a serious injury a few years ago then he would have been out of sight he would have improved so much."
Bismarck du Plessis, Pierre Spies, Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn all drop down to the bench, which also includes Gurthrö Steenkamp, who comes back onto the bench after missing the second Test.
Deon Carstens retains his place amongst the reserves.
"This is a very strong side. At the end of the Super 14, I wanted to have 28 players who could play for the Springboks at any time and I think we've achieved that goal," said De Villiers.
"I'm very happy with this selection."
De Villiers admitted that he changed his mind "five times this week" and that if the team was not now committed to paper he might well have changed his mind again.
Considering his reasoning for making the changes, the surprising significant absentee from the squad for this game is Earl Rose, who has now gone on a Bok tour under De Villiers and been part of the squad for an entire Lions series without yet even getting a place on the bench.
"I have a long term plan with Earl Rose, I have achieved what I wanted to with him. With him, it is a long term plan," explained De Villiers.
As for his starting back-line, he said the Lions will have their hands full playing against the team he and the Bok management have chosen.
"I get goose bumps when I think about that back three and with a finisher like Jongi Nokwe, if you blink you won't see him," added De Villiers.
"If Jaque Fourie and Wynand Olivier can make the space, then they will know his number. If you look at the side, and take it player by player, who would have to ask 'Where did we weaken the side?'"

The Springbok tight five is relativley weak. If Simon Shaw plays the driving lock role and he packs behind Vickery the Lions will dominate up front and should win plenty of ball and also the game. However it is clear now that SA intend to run this international from all over. The lions are weak in center and the boks will try to exploit this with their best center pairing in a long long while. But Fourie and Oliver will not get the ball they need to play the game as the Lions forwards will control possesion. Lions to win by 10-15 points. Simon Shaw again for man of the match.

Arguably a better side.. Critically, a better centre pairing and the best flyhalf in SA by a country mile in Morne Steyn.
Heinrich Brussow should have played in place of out of form & long injured Burger anyway.
Ryan Kankowski, is an exceptional talent Chiliboy Ralepelle is very underrated as he doesn't get many opportunities.
I agree with many others that the wings are our weakness. Odwa Ndungane has no X-factor about him. An intelligent player but lacking the talent of others . Jongi Nokwe is quick and a good finisher but is weak in most other areas.
Both lack size to get over the advantage line in tight situations.
The key is Morne Steyn is there to dictate the territorial game and is a deadly place kicker.
I think this team can do it !!

Amazing the consensus with this article. It is great to have such a strong squad.
I always grade internationals as A,B or C grade.
A's - true top tier internationals. Solid and well balanced with a bit of the 'x-factor'.
B's - solid internationals. Won't let the side down but also won't set the field alight.
C's - A/B but lacking experience. OR Not up to scratch but place markers due to injuries/politics (can anybody say Earl Rose?)
It's also interesting that some top tier (Super14 etc.) are brilliant at that level but cannot make the step up to internationals, while some S14 players are solid at that level but step up and are brilliant at the international level.
For me:
A - Fourie, Olivier, du Preez, Smith, Matfield, Smit
B with potential - Steyn, Kankowski, Brussow (no McCaw or Smith yet- but just wait!), Mtawarira (needs more experience)
B - Muller, Kirchner
C with potential - Relepele
C's - Ndungane, Nokwe (how many times have you seen them create something from nothing like Sivivatu, Mesanga etc.)
So that is it. A very strong side with B grade and better players with just a few weak C's.
15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Jaque Fourie, 12 Wynand Olivier, 11 Jongi Nokwe, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Juan Smith, 6 Heinrich Brussow, 5 Victor Matfield, 4 Johann Muller, 3 John Smit, 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.

Mtawarira against Vickery...will see if the first test was "just a bad evening" (for the Lions prop)

What a pleasure, having supported the Springboks since 1955, to be able to look forward to such a strong "second string" 15 run out onto the field on Saturday.

Exiting team and by no means the 2nd string team. It will make for a good game on Saturday. Its an opportunity for guys like Ryan Kankowski to show what he is capable of as well as another opportunity for Steyn and his boot. That no10 jersey could have a new owner.

Improvement in numbers 6,10,12 and 13, pack is de-powered through absence of du Plessis and Botha, inexperienced back 3 - there'll be a lot of kicks going their way from the Lions.
Potentially good side, but Bok management clearly sees preparation for the future being more important than making it a 3-0 win

The issue here is that these players haven't played together and combinations haven't been tested. This may backfire on the Boks, the team may possible only gel late in the match. I agree with the former post, that nos 10, 12 and 13 are far more formidable that the former team. With Brussow starting, he may make up in terms of possession while the "new" forwards try to read each other.

A good side. I'm excited to see Kirchner and Steyn playing together for the boks. Kankowski deserves his starting place as Spies has been quiet, although efficient, at 8. The centre pairing also offers more going forward than the previous one. This isn't a 2nd string side, I think the changes are rotational with one eye on blooding some in-form young players for the 3N.

This is not necessarily a second string side, the back line may be superior to the "first" team, and if the forwards can hold their own, this may be as good as the "first" team.

I won't really rate this as a second string team. The backline, with the exception of the wings, is markably stronger. The forwards are also strong. Due to the improved 10, 12 and 13 the boks should take this one by atleast 7.

Bar the 2 wings, hooker and 1 lock...and a possible debate at no.8.. this is much closer to our best 15 than the team that beat the Lions in the first 2 tests....Boks by 20.
