All Blacks: Late tries save blushes against Argentina

New Zealand battled past a committed Argentina side to eventually ground out a 21-5 Rugby Championship victory at a rain-soaked Westpac Stadium on Saturday.

The world champion All Blacks, number one in the world and undefeated since beating France in the RWC final last year, were hanging on the ropes for three quarters of the match until two quick-fire tries secured a hard-fought win.

It was a bad case of déjà vu for the visitors, who - just like they did in their last meeting with NZ in last year's RWC quarter-final - kept the home side tryless until a five-pointer in the 67th minute from Julian Savea gave the All Blacks some breathing space.

Another touchdown from Cory Jane five minutes later sealed the deal for New Zealand as Argentina simply ran out of gas after trailing 6-5 at half-time.

Difficult conditions meant both sides were never going to produce champagne rugby, but the tourists will take satisfaction from another respectable scoreline. Indeed, the Pumas once again refused to be push-overs and rattled the home side through some courageous defence that forced the All Blacks into making uncharacteristc mistakes.

But as the weather calmed in the second period so did New Zealand as the men in black gained control to claim their third of the tournament, while the Pumas now have two losses and a draw.

The All Blacks made their intentions clear from the start by playing a wide game despite the conditions, however the Pumas well-organised defence kept the hosts at bay. Fly-half Aaron Cruden missed an early penalty attempt, but found his target 10 minutes in to put the hosts 3-0 ahead.

Argentina hit back brilliantly though a try to veteran prop Rodrigo Roncero who powered over from close-range after the Argentinian pack followed up on an earlier knock-on from Ma'a Nonu who lost the ball in contact. Martin Rodriguez's conversion attempt hit the post and bounced wide, but the crowd were stunned to see their beloved All Blacks trailing 3-5.

Nerves were settled slightly when Cruden slotted his second penalty to nudge New Zealand back in front (6-5) in the 25th minute, after a ruck infringement by Roncero.

The All Blacks were denied a chance to open up a significant lead on the stroke of half-time when, with Victor Vito in full flight down the left wing, Marcelo Bosch produced a crucial try-saving tackle and took the flanker into touch.

The severe winds caused a half-time power-cut at Westpac Stadium - a mishap that stretched the normal ten-minute interval to 27. The scrappy Test match continued after the lights came back on, and it didn;t take long for Cruden to stretch his side's lead to four points (9-5).

But the hosts were immediately on the back foot again following the restart, but Rodriguez missed an excellent chance to cut the deficit back to one point after pushing an attempt from bang in front.

New Zealand finally started to click and threatened to score before flank Julio Farias Cabello was sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on and the writing was on the wall for Pumas who were now forced to battle on with 14 men.

As the game neared its end, the All Blacks finally gave themselves a comfortable position with 13 minutes to go after Conrad Smith drew three defenders before offloading to Nonu who unselfishly gave the glory to Savea in the corner.

And Jane soon dived over for a second try after racing onto a long miss pass from Cruden which was ruled not to be forward. Cruden landed an excellent conversion from far out on the right to seal the deal.

Man of the match: Argentina pivot Juan Martin Hernandez stood out for both his hard tackling and tactical nous, while once again Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe led admirably from the front. All Blacks centre Conrad Smith was the best of the backs and tried his best to create chances. But we're giving this gong to lock Luke Romano who did everything asked of him for 80 minutes, including taking all his line-outs as well as flying up in the air to challenge the Pumas' throws on every occasion while his work in the tight was immense.

Moment of the match: There weren't many. But whilst the two touchdowns by Julian Savea and Cory Jane buried the brave Pumas, it was prop Rodrigo Roncero's try that warned the All Blacks that the visitors meant business and weren't in the windy city to make up the numbers.

Villain of the match: Whilst Julio Farias Cabello saved a certain five-pointer with his deliberate slap-down of the ball, the ensuing yellow card gave the All Blacks a one-man advantage and it was only a matter of time before they scored their first try.

Terrible conditions which contributed to the error rate but still sloppy stuff in four games now by the ABs. Argies showed they are no Italy - they are competing from the get go.

Wonderful to read elsewhere on sites that "Telfon" Read was very average and Messam was great. Finally someone has noticed that Read can play poorly and Messam has been a wasted player for the ABs.

Just returned from the match. First half conditions were horrendous. Argentina were excellent in defence and put the AB pack under pressure.

Australia will need to be very careful as this Puma side are very very tough up front.

Huge credit to the travelling Argentina support, great voice before and after the match.

The first 20min the pumas smashed the Abs, and upset their tempo!-the abs were rattled! Credit to the pumas for taking it to the ABs, i could just tell by the way they were singing their national anthem, that they were going to play their hearts out!!!

Credit to the ABs for regrouping, and not shying away from contact, they gave as good as they got!

-Kudos to Rioncero-the man just keeps on going!!!

One weakness of the pumas is their tendency to give away penalties! The same number 6 who got sinned binned, was also responsible for another penalty, just as he got back on the field!

-How good was McCaw?? He just keeps running the ball like a mad man!! McCaw lead from the front!! who said he was getting old??...

-As for Referee Roman Poite, ...you have to be the most PEDANTIC REF OF SCRUMS EVER!!! "crouch, touch, (wait, wait wait, wait) PAUSE, (wait, wait, wait) and then (wait, wait, wait, and again for another 10secs) ANGAIGE" "Any deviance from this will be penalised!" ..just shocking!!

-And last but not least, can the guy who didn't pay the power bill for the stadium lights, please get the sack now! lol.........

Heart of oak, I have to agree, Argentina were fantastis, passionate, and brave to a man.

They were unlucky to come away from menosa with a shared result, and proved today that they are worthy of playing in this tournament..

Horrible conditions did not bode well for a great match.

Liam Messm proved he is worthy of the 6 Jersey.

How good was McCaw in the 2nd half???

Or Conrad Smith??

An interesting tournament ahead.

I believe the Wobblies may not win a game.

A very enjoyable match, for the gritty spectacle and as proof that tries can be scored against the All Blacks.

I am sad to see that Wellington crowds these days are prone to booing. The behaviour reflects badly on them. In my opinion, and no doubt I will be told I am mistaken, it is worse in Wellington than in other locations. Must be a side-effect of the design of the stadium, I guess.

Well done to both teams. 1st try to Argentina was a surprise.

There is no doubt the AB's are the best team in the world, however IMO this competition will help Argentina and soon they will be in the top 5.

All Blacks, terrible first half and I am sure if they play like that next week, they will definitely lose. I think Messam just proved tonight that the 6 jersey is his. Cruden had a shocker and so did A Smith but probably because the Forwards were dominated by the Pumas.

Heart_of_oak, I think you mean jonesy2, hes the only bloke who fits that description. the rest of the AB supporters knew/know how tough the Pumas are. And yes i agree all credit goes to Arg, the ABs played poorly because they were pressured to do so.

Next week should be interesting, Pumas will be 0 times harder to beat next week, so the ABs better get their act together.

heart_of_oak, haha 2 weeks.. ? Really! How may thousands of miles was that? :)

Thought Argentina played really well, played the advantage line to the law and probably surprised running in attack. Thought AB set piece very good, Romano in particular despite the solid hits. Messam brought an edge, good sub! Fitness as usual and attack came right toward the end. Cruden had it tough at the start but the weather eased and running was on, roof stadium in Dunedin for ABs to find their timing.

Jeez some patronising comments towards the Argies. If it had been oz with that score v ABs it would be unending criticism. Argies messed up a chance to beat ABs. Conditions were right and started well but didnt deliver on the scoreboard. They got a lead but couldn't push on. They should be angry. ABs are beatable in Argentina and they must deliver. Can't believe the powercut! Get it together Wellington!

@heart_of_oak - the Puma's tackled well and were very committed, but as for their style of play - come on you're having a laugh. Not the most exciting, and as for defence - very solid, but how many yellow's should they have had in their own 22. Appauling cheating!! Is that their style - yip!! One of the most boring teams in the world to watch, and I trust you agree with that.

What was clear was that the conditions suited Argentina today. Well done to them for keeping the score down, and thanks to the AB's for trying to play an interesting game of rugby!

great performance from argentina and highlights that draw was no fluke, who would you back for the return match?

a real test for the young ones in abs - four who started had 5 or less caps, and 2 off the bench had 0 and 2. For those who criticised the locks, don't think they did much wrong esp considering only their 4th and 6th tests.

Well done to the crowd who turned out on such a crap night - friends couldn't make it from Wairarapa - Rimutaka highway closed in gusts of 170kmh and an extra 3hr+ detour the result.

All those who criticised Argentina for the style of their play, do you still want to take that line or are you prepared to eat humble pie now ? This was a damn good effort by Argentina against a very very good All Black side. Maybe people will say the All Blacks were poor but that isn't being fair to Argentina.

I also wonder what it's like to play a game after travelling so far only a few days before. I've often worked thousands of miles from home and it can take me two weeks to recover from the jet lag.

Well all i can say is well done Argentina ,really made the ABs work for the win,and matched them for most of the game imo. Both sides showed great defence ,and intensity, there where some almighty big hits, and the battle of the breakdown was emense .The yellow card i feel was the major fasctor ,although the ABs had seemed to have stepped up a gear,Argentina with 14 men just couldnt cope, and i felt they showed tiredness after the 1st AB try,and New Zealand coped quiye easily then ,though all creadit to the pumas for having a last go at the end of the game.Congraulations to both teams in giving us supporters a good game to watch despite the weather

Great effort from the pumas, boy do they hit hard! they played good wet weather rugby and put the Ab's under pressure many times. And they are only going to get better which is scary thought.

Yet again the Ab's didnt really get out of 2nd gear until very late in the game. It really was our bench that saved us. Messam, hore and weepu were outstanding which lifted the tempo.

Looks like crudens not quite ready to take the mantle off carter yet. While solid probably didn't control it as well I think carter would have in that weather. But not bad. In saying that we won in ugly conditions so always a plus. Bring on the boks!

Good game,

Well done pumas but again ABs do enough to win just like the 2nd test against Ireland.

In the end they wore down the big puma forwards and dominated the last 20mins which is were they won it

I guess thats why the are the best finishers in the game. Weather dictated running ruby was not going to happen so they finally got that in the 2nd with great build ups then finishing.

Very happy the pumas are in this comp has to be good for everyone no easy beats
